Prague has officially chosen its Christmas tree for 2025. A spruce from Jiřetín pod Jedlovou will illuminate the Old Town Square, marking the start of the city’s holiday season. City councillor Michal Hroza (TOP 09), responsible for infrastructure, revealed the choice on social media. “We’ve decided! This year, a spruce from Jiřetín pod Jedlovou will shine on the Old Town Square,” Hroza announced on Facebook, sharing a photo of the tree standing proudly beside a traditional wooden cabin. The spruce, which measures over 26 meters, will be shortened to around 23 meters before its journey to Prague. “It’s more than half a century old and about 11 meters wide — truly a forest giant,” Hroza wrote. However, the tree wasn’t chosen solely for festive reasons. According to the councillor, it was already due to be removed because it posed a risk to nearby buildings. “The spruce had to be cut down anyway because it threatened the owner’s historic timbered cottage,” he explained. Thanks to the city’s decision, the tree will get a second life as a centerpiece of Prague’s Christmas celebrations. “It’s wonderful that this spruce can bring joy to all residents and visitors who come to see the Christmas...
After several delays and months of speculation, the American fast food chain Five Guys is finally set to open its first restaurant in Prague. The branch, located in the Máj shopping center on Národní třída, is expected to open its doors by the end of the year, according to CzechCrunch, which first reported the news. Originally planned for last summer, the opening was postponed multiple times — first to autumn, then to spring, and most recently to early autumn — due to construction delays and logistical complications at the Máj site. “We can confirm that the first Czech branch of Five Guys will open in the premises of Máj by the end of this year,” said Jiří Janoušek, spokesperson for the shopping center. Patrik Němeček from PP Partners, the agency managing communications for Five Guys in Czechia, added that more details about the launch will be announced in late November. In June, Jan Kotrbáček, head of retail leasing for Central and Eastern Europe at Cushman & Wakefield, told iDNES.cz that the company was targeting a September opening. That timeline was later adjusted as final interior work continued. Five Guys has also launched an official Czech website, where it is already...

On Sunday, November 17, Prague’s Národní Třída will once again transform into a lively space of remembrance and reflection as the Korzo Národní festival marks the 36th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. This year’s event, themed “Thanks to You for Being Able”, invites the public to celebrate freedom, democracy, and civic courage through art, discussion, and music. Organized by the civic association Díky, že můžem, the festival is one of the largest annual gatherings commemorating the events of 1989. As in previous years, it will offer a full-day program stretching from morning until evening, combining solemn tributes with cultural and educational activities. The street between the National Theatre and Jungmann Square will be closed to traffic, turning into a symbolic promenade of freedom filled with music stages, discussion zones, and art installations. The day will begin with the traditional Velvet Brunch, a benefit event supporting single mothers through the Fandi mámám organization. Visitors can enjoy breakfast outdoors, surrounded by music and conversations about freedom, solidarity, and civic responsibility. At 11 a.m., the Pedagogical Association Emil will lead a family-friendly educational walk along Národní Třída and its surroundings, designed for children and their parents. Later, the Living Room of Václav Havel will...
A runaway dog caused major disruption to Prague’s metro network on Thursday morning after running into a Line A tunnel. Police and firefighters spent hours tracking the animal, which proved too quick and agile to capture easily. According to police spokesman Jan Daněk, the incident began when the dog entered the tunnel near Motol Hospital station and ran toward Petřiny. Shortly afterward, it was spotted again at Bořislavka, moving closer to the city center. By mid-morning, the chase had moved above ground. “He has currently run down Dejvická Street and is still heading toward the center. We are still on his trail,” officers posted on the X platform around 10:30 a.m. Police believe the animal is an approximately eight-month-old German Shepherd or wolfdog cross. “It won’t be easy — the dog is fast and agile,” Daněk told Novinky.cz. Initially, the Prague Public Transport Company (DPP) suspended metro service between Motol and Dejvická. As the situation continued, the suspension was extended in both directions up to Náměstí Míru. To assist commuters, DPP deployed replacement buses between Motol and Dejvická. Passengers were also advised to use tram connections from Dejvická toward Bořislavka and Veleslavín. Prague’s long-awaited Škoda ForCity Plus 52T trams have successfully completed all tests and obtained type approval, clearing the way for their official launch on the city’s streets. The new low-floor trams, produced by Škoda Group, underwent a rigorous homologation process that included 20,000 kilometers of test runs without passengers and another 20,000 kilometers in passenger service simulations. With these tests completed, the trams are now awaiting final handover to the Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) before being introduced into regular operation. “We have successfully completed the homologation process for the new vehicle type,” said Jan Šurovský, DPP’s Deputy Chairman of the Board and Technical Director. “I greatly appreciate that the entire project is running according to schedule — which, in the current context of vehicle deliveries, is a major achievement.” According to him, the first units should begin service in about three weeks. The Škoda ForCity Plus 52T is part of the latest generation of trams designed for comfort, efficiency, and sustainability. Each vehicle features a fully air-conditioned, low-noise interior, ergonomic seating, and a modern passenger information system. A standout innovation is the new electromechanical braking system, which ensures quieter operation, greater braking precision, and reduced maintenance costs. The trams...

A year after Prague imposed strict limits on organized bar tours, city authorities report a noticeable drop in illegal pub crawls disturbing the historic center at night. According to the Prague City Police, officers handled 22 cases connected to unauthorized pub crawls in the past twelve months — a fraction of what used to happen before the 2024 ban. City officials introduced the restrictions to curb alcohol-fueled tourism that had become a serious nuisance for residents, especially in Prague 1, home to Old Town and Charles Bridge. The idea of a “pub crawl” originally describes a casual evening where friends visit several bars in one night — a social tradition especially common in Ireland during the holiday season, where participants dress festively and sing carols as they go. In Prague, however, commercial tour companies transformed the concept into a mass tourism business. For a fixed fee, groups of foreign tourists were led through multiple bars, often ending up heavily intoxicated and loud in the streets of the city center. The ban on organized pub crawls took effect in autumn 2024. It was made possible through amendments to Prague’s market regulation rules, which govern how guiding services operate in public spaces....
Everyone knows Paris is a magnificent city. It’s no secret that Prague is worth a visit, and that you’ll have a wonderful time in Berlin. But according to Condé Nast Traveler (CNT), the best city to visit in Europe right now is Valletta, Malta. Every year, CNT invites its readers to vote for their favorite travel destinations, compiling the responses into an overall satisfaction score – essentially, the percentage of respondents who had a good time in a given destination. The magazine surveys around 500,000 people, meaning a destination must appeal to a large and diverse group of travelers to receive a high score. Valletta, Malta topped the list with an impressive 97.3% approval rating. Known for its stunning golden architecture and warm weather, this city offers an underrated alternative to other Mediterranean destinations like southern Italy or the Canary Islands. Oslo came in second with a score of 94.4, followed by Vienna, which maintained its third place spot from last year – no surprise for such an iconic city. The top 20 best cities to visit in Europe according to the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards: Valletta, Malta Oslo, Norway Vienna, Austria Copenhagen, Denmark Madrid, Spain Munich, Germany...

Sting will perform as a trio, joined by long-time guitarist Dominic Miller and drummer Chris Maas. The same lineup appeared last year at Lochotín Amphitheatre in Plzeň and this summer at Colours of Ostrava. The group will also play Brno’s Winning Group Arena this weekend. Flora metro station on Line A will undergo a major reconstruction beginning February 2, 2026. The Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) confirmed that the station will close for ten months to allow for extensive modernization, including new escalators, lighting, and the long-awaited installation of elevators to make the station barrier-free. The project, led by construction firms Strabag and OHLA ŽS, will cost 1.29 billion CZK (excluding VAT). The renovation will be similar in scope to the recent overhaul of Jiřího z Poděbrad station. It will involve a complete modernization of both passenger and technical areas, replacing outdated Soviet-era escalators with modern, energy-efficient ones, upgrading cable systems, and introducing LED lighting, air conditioning, and an updated information system. Preparatory work will begin this year while the station remains open. This phase will include partial dismantling of cladding and leak repairs. “We expect the station to remain closed for about ten months, as was the case at Jiřího z Poděbrad. Trains will continue passing through at reduced speed,” he said. After reopening in late 2026, work will continue on building the elevators, expected to be completed by early 2028. Once finished, Flora will become the 49th barrier-free station in Prague’s metro network....
