Ondra Slanina, co-owner and executive chef of Chateau St. Havel and Ginger & Fred, is launching a new culinary concept in Prague. His latest project, Vinobona Chef’s Table Restaurant & Wine, brings together local ingredients, Czech tradition, and a deeply personal approach to fine dining. Slanina’s kitchen philosophy is rooted in using ingredients that are either locally sourced or have deep roots in Czech culinary history. The same approach defines his new venture, where the tasting menu features high-end ingredients such as foie gras, truffles, snail caviar, and even edible gold. All ingredients are sourced in precise quantities from small regional producers including Farma Havlíkův Dvůr, Šnečí farma Nahošovice, and Olejový mlýn Petráveč, ensuring freshness and minimal waste. The meat-focused tasting menu includes veal with pickled cucumber, foie gras with cranberries and truffles, pike perch in saffron sauce, and beef rib garnished with chestnuts and gold leaf. The vegetarian menu offers dishes such as bryndza with buckwheat, creamed mushrooms with caviar, and cauliflower with truffles and gold. For dessert, guests can enjoy semolina with honey and carob nuts, prepared in the traditional Czech way. Slanina is joined by Lucie Sládková, a specialist in gastronomic service and guest care. Together, they...

The streets and parks of Rohan City, a new district taking shape along Rohanské nábřeží in Prague’s Karlín, will be named after renowned philosophers from both Czechia and abroad. A new square, set to become the central hub of the area, will bear the name of French thinker Simone Weil, one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century. A Tribute to Great Thinkers The Sekyra Group, the developer behind Rohan City, is leading one of Prague’s most ambitious urban transformation projects. The company’s founder, Luďek Sekyra, envisioned naming the new streets to honor prominent philosophers who have shaped moral and political thought. “I am pleased that our proposal to commemorate key Czech and Western philosophers has been accepted. These individuals have played a crucial role in shaping our civilization, influencing discussions on values, freedom, morality, and justice, both through their work and personal convictions,” said Luďek Sekyra. Famous Names in Karlín The streets parallel to Rohanský nábřeží, which borders the Rohan City project, will be named after philosophers J. L. Fischer, Jan Sokol, Immanuel Kant, Jacques Derrida, John Stuart Mill, and Roger Scruton, legendary supporters of domestic dissent. The streets perpendicular to them will commemorate Emmanuel Levinas, Radim...
Passengers in Prague will witness a unique transformation on Wednesday, April 16, when the Masarykovo nádraží tram stop turns into the “Easter” (Velikonoční) stop for a single day. From 10:00 to 18:00, the station will be decorated with flowers, balloons, and festive ornaments, creating a cheerful spring atmosphere. Adding to the charm, Mr. Hare and Mrs. Hare will welcome visitors under the tram stop’s canopy. Passengers can also stop by an information stand to pick up a spring-themed badge. The event is organized by Prague Integrated Transport (PID). The famous singer and songwriter Marilyn Manson, born Brian Hugh Warner, is set to return to the capital of the Czech Republic for a highly anticipated concert this fall. After his sold-out performance in Brno in February, the American artist will perform at Prague’s Fortuna Sports Hall on November 15, as part of his global “One Assassination Under God – Chapter 1” Tour. Over the years, Marilyn Manson has remained the only constant member of his band, continuously reinventing himself. For decades, his unique blend of music, gothic aesthetics, and intense performances has kept him at the center of attention and controversy. What if you could prevent a huge number of deaths due to heart issues by just using a simple app? Kardi Ai does exactly that: it helps track arrhythmia, a heart condition which on its own isn’t too dangerous, but over the long term can be the cause for many more serious conditions like stroke and heart attacks. Kardi AI is a relatively new startup, started by a professor of cardiology and his neighbour. One day the neighbour was complaining about the holter he had to wear to detect if he had arrhythmia, a massive contraption that seriously impedes mobility. Worse yet, the holter has issues when recording instances of arrhythmia. Measurements on the go The solution that this unlikely duo came up with, explains Kardi Ai CEO Vlastimil Hrabal in an interview, is very much home in the 21st century. When users subscribe to Kardi Ai’s service, they get access to the smartphone app and also get sent a belt. The belt is clasped over the chest and acts like a mobile ECG, measuring arrhythmia – and only arrhythmia. It cannot detect heart attacks and the like, which a “real” ECG can. Kardi Ai works on a subscription system,...
Prague Zoo has officially begun construction on a new Arctic pavilion, which will feature state-of-the-art enclosures for polar bears and harbour seals. The project was announced by Pavel Brandl, curator of mammal breeding, on Saturday during the zoo’s 94th season opening. The event included a ceremonial laying of the foundation stone for the Arctic exhibition complex. The pavilion will consist of three enclosures: one with a watercourse for polar bears and two for harbour seals. According to the zoo’s director, Miroslav Bobek, the facility will offer visitors a unique underwater view of the bears, enhancing the educational and observational experience. Bobek emphasised that the new pavilion aligns with the latest research on polar bear care while continuing Prague Zoo’s long-standing tradition of breeding them. The zoo has housed polar bears since 1932 and achieved a world-first in 1942 with the successful artificial rearing of a cub. Despite these milestones, breeding polar bears remains complex. Female bears sometimes reject or harm their young, and replicating their milk for artificial rearing poses a significant challenge. The construction is expected to take around three years and cost 755 million CZK—well below the initial estimate of over one billion CZK. Spanning 8,000 square meters...
A new study has confirmed what many have already suspected—drug use in the Czech Republic is increasing. According to wastewater analysis conducted by the TG Masaryk Water Research Institute (VÚV), cocaine is the most common drug in Prague and Pilsen. At the same time, methamphetamine (pervitin) dominates in Ústí nad Labem and Ostrava. The study also found that marijuana use is rising, with its presence in public spaces becoming more visible, particularly in Prague. Gone are the days when smoking a joint was done in secret; today, the scent of marijuana is replacing cigarette smoke on the streets of the capital. However, how do scientists identify which drugs are being consumed and where? The solution was discovered in the wastewater analysis—novel, anonymous, and highly accurate for gazing at national drug consumption patterns. How Scientists Track Drug Use Through Wastewater Each year, researchers take wastewater samples from large Czech cities and test them for traces of drugs. It is a straightforward, objective way to see what people are using. The data is then sent to the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA), allowing comparisons with other countries. “The method provides an objective and anonymous view of drug consumption in the population. Thanks...

This weekend, a shopping frenzy erupted at a Lidl store in Prague’s Štěrboholy district, turning the supermarket into a battleground. Shoppers clashed over a batch of umbrellas sold at an extremely low price, leading to chaos that only ended with police intervention. The situation spiraled out of control when Lidl introduced new stock, including umbrellas priced at just a few crowns. Customers began grabbing at boxes before they even hit the shelves, leading to a physical struggle. A viral video circulating on social media captures the moment when shoppers tugged fiercely at the merchandise, with some pulling so hard they nearly fell over. A Lidl employee desperately attempted to restore order, shouting “Enough!”, but her pleas went ignored as the fight escalated. The situation became so intense that store security was forced to intervene.
