Prague authorities have begun removing unauthorized stalls disrupting the appearance and functionality of public spaces in the city center, according to the Prague 1 council’s financial committee chairman, Giancarlo Lamberti (TOP 09). “At the end of last year, I identified an unauthorized stall in front of the Czech National Bank, which was being used to sell bus tickets,” said Lamberti. The stall was operated by so-called “umbrella vendors” – individuals who falsely pose as charity workers to bypass laws prohibiting street sales. After further investigation, in cooperation with Prague 1 mayor Terezia Radoměřská (TOP 09), it was confirmed that the stall lacked both a lease agreement and a public space occupancy permit, rendering it illegal. “Even though we couldn’t identify a specific operator in this case, the law allows us to address these issues effectively, and we have taken the necessary steps to remove the stall,” Lamberti stated. Prague police are investigating a bold thief who managed to steal high-end mobile phones worth nearly 150,000 CZK by targeting the same store in Pankrác three times. The man, who has yet to be identified, altered his clothing for each theft but wore the same distinctive white Nike sneakers, making him recognizable in surveillance footage. The first theft occurred on December 29 last year. According to police reports, the man acted like a customer, carefully inspecting phones at the counter. He then pretended to browse the store before returning to the counter, where he cut the security cable of a phone worth nearly 50,000 CZK and left undetected. Four members of Parliament from both government and opposition parties have proposed tightening requirements for obtaining a taxi driver’s license. Their proposal targets non-EU citizens, aiming to ensure that only individuals holding a Czech or EU-issued driving license can operate as taxi drivers in the country. The amendment to the government’s Road Transport Act was put forward by MPs Renáta Zajíčková (ODS), Patrik Nacher (ANO), Michal Zuna (TOP 09), and Jakub Michálek (Pirates). In 1988, the Czech Republic was still struggling with the communist regime, and Depeche Mode was one of the first bands from the West to perform in the country. The interest in the concert that took place on March 11th, was overwhelming and there were thousands of people coming from abroad. The capacity of the venue (Sportovni Hala) was 16,000 but there were about 90,000 plus ticket requests. The people from the art agency Pragokoncert were afraid that the Sportovni Hala was going to be damaged by raging hordes of people, and that the concert would become regrettable. The ticket sale was enormous. Overall, more than 250,000 people wanted to go to the concert. Interesting amounts, considering that the Depeche Mode albums were not sold here and the music videos were not broadcast… However, the concert performance was absolutely free of trouble in the end.
