Znojmo is not a big city but it’s one that’s home to a set of unique tours, on which visitors will discover an intriguing underground tunnel system. The Znojmo Catacombs are a fantastic labyrinth of underground passageways. However, they are not actually catacombs and no people are actually buried there. The Znojmo Catacombs were developed for defensive purposes to defend the city from attack. They date back to the 1300s and were expanded over the centuries by connecting various cellars beneath buildings with each other. The end result was houses and palaces in the city connected with an elaborate labyrinth. Some of the tunnels lead under old fortifications and even out of the city – so that inhabitants would have an escape in case the city would have fallen or to get out of the city and forage for food in times of siege. The caverns were well constructed and they have plenty of airshafts. The cellars had fireplaces that were connected to chimneys of houses on the surface. The smoke from the tunnels would rise through the chimneys of the houses and hide the tunnels beneath. Inside the tunnels, water wells were built so that the inhabitants could survive for a...
The Czech authorities have decided to tighten up entry restrictions for travellers from Germany, Denmark, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Andorra, Romania, Spain, the Canary Islands and Madeira, after a spike up in the number of cases in these seven countries and two islands in recent weeks. According to the decision announced by the Czech Ministry of Health, starting from Monday, November 22, Germany, Denmark, Liechtenstein, Iceland, and Andorra will be added to the dark red category. “Romania, the Canary Islands and Madeira will be moved to the red category. The orange category will expand to include Spain,” the Ministry notes in a press release announcing the changes to the lists, adding that the changes have been made based on available data from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The decision means that travellers from Germany, Denmark, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Andorra, who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 and have not recovered from the virus in the last 180 days, aside from having to fill in the prearrival form, will also need to undergo an antigen or PCR test before they reach the country if they are travelling by public transportation. This test is not required for those reaching Czechia with...

France has tightened restrictions on unvaccinated visitors from several European countries as the continent sees a new surge in COVID-19 cases. Unvaccinated travelers from Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary and Greece need to show a negative PCR test taken within 24 hours of their departure for France, according to the new rules announced late Friday. Previously, tests could be taken within 48 hours. The measure comes as European countries struggle to contain a new surge in COVID-19 blamed on low vaccination coverage and the relaxation of social and public health measures. German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday pleaded for citizens to get vaccinated. “These are very difficult weeks ahead of us,” Merkel said in a video speech. “I am asking you: Join us, and try to convince relatives and friends as well [to get vaccinated].” She also called on vaccinated Germans to get booster shots. “If we stand together, if we think about protecting ourselves and caring for others, we can save our country a lot this winter,” the chancellor said. Germany reinstated free rapid COVID-19 testing on Saturday, two days after the country’s daily number of new coronavirus cases rose above 50,000. In the Netherlands, three people remained in custody after violence at a protest in...

Located just a one-hour drive from the Czech capital, Mcely is a picturesque village of great mystical allure, and it is home to the beautiful Chateau Mcely, which hides within the famous St. Georges Forest. The chateau’s history began when it was built back in 1698, on the site of a former Celtic settlement. It has been home to noble families and lots of royalty over the years. The actual village of Mcely also has a significant history- the worship of female deity here has long been tradition because of its religious magnitude. There are detailed recordings of an apparition of the Virgin Mary of Mcely, which appeared to three orphans back in 1849 and 1850. Old records state that she revealed herself to the girls for nine months and told them nine different secrets in a small field between the Chateau and a neighbouring church. The sightings are known as the Mcely Miracle. The guests of Chateau Mcely report feeling a strong, loving, magical energy when they visit, almost as if the Virgin Mary’s presence still looms. The aristocratic residence, in this magical location, is the embodiment of a five-star luxury property. It’s a romantic and rejuvenating venue with both...
Prague Mayor Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates) thanked Taiwan for its cooperation after talks this week with Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu. Hřib negotiated with Wu, among other things, on a direct line between Prague and Taipei. The negotiations were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Wu said Taiwan “will do its utmost to restore tourist contacts and allow people to visit the Czech Republic.” “We have talked with China Airlines representatives about the possibility of a direct line between the two cities,” he said, adding that the negotiations seem to be going well. “I would like to appreciate that, from my point of view, Taiwan is clearly a much more reliable partner than the party of the People’s Republic of China used to be for us,” said the mayor of Prague. Both Senate Chair Miloš Vystrčil and Zdeněk Hřib have been vocal supporters of Taiwan’s right to independence, drawing protest and various sanctions from China. Taiwanese delegations have been visiting the Czech Republic as part of regular bilateral economic consultations since 2016 in cooperation with the Ministry...
