From October 2-3, 2021, heavy hitters and fun-seekers of all stripes will be invited to step up to the plate for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic at the annual Heavy Hitters Fundraising Softball Tournament. Organised twice-annually for nearly 22 years by the Prague Peak Education Fund (PPEF), Prague’s largest co-ed charity softball tournament has been dedicated to raising funds for several educational activities in the Czech Republic, including Seminars for Teachers, Grab the Reader, Teachers Circles, and the Thomayer University Hospital’s school for long-term hospitalized children. “I have been organizing the Heavy Hitters tournament for over 15 years,” related PPEF Director Simona Huitric, “and many organisations now rely on our support. The government released 65 million CZK from the budget reserve for the organization of the final tournament of the Billie Jean King Tennis Cup (formerly Fed Cup) in the Czech Republic. Thanks to this, the tennis association can sign an agreement with the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for the top women’s tennis event, which should take place in the O2 arena in Prague in the first week of November. The final tournament was to be played in Budapest, but was canceled last year and postponed this year due to the coronavirus situation. The Hungarian capital gave up the organization of the event in May. “The government has approved the provision of 65 million CZK to the Czech Tennis Association through the National Sports Agency for the organization of the championship,” said Finance Minister Alena Schillerová (ANO) at a press conference after the cabinet meeting. Prague Marathon organizers said Monday they had canceled this year’s edition of the race because of local Covid rules. “With current restrictions due to the pandemic: start in waves, social distance, limited technical area, control of testing and vaccination… it is not feasible to guarantee an event on a level you expect from us,” organizers said in a statement. The 2020 edition was canceled amid the first Covid-19 wave, while the 2021 race originally scheduled for May was postponed until October 9. “We have to make a decision that is extremely difficult for We have to postpone the race until (May) 2022,” the organizers added on Monday. Sparta Prague will host its opening group-stage game in the Europa League behind closed doors due to racial abuse of a player by fans. Sparta said on Monday it won’t appeal the punishment by UEFA. The incidents took place during the first leg of the Champions League third qualifying round match at home to Monaco on Aug 3. A group of fans directed monkey chants at Monaco midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni after he scored the opening goal in the first half, and again when the game was over. The Monaco match was stopped for three minutes. Monaco coach Niko Kovac said his team was “disgusted” by the behaviour. Kovac’s team won 2-0 and followed up with a 3-1 home victory in the second leg. Sparta said it identified the fans responsible for the abuse and banned them. The Disciplinary Committee of the Czech Football League fined Sparta Prague 100,000 CZK because of the acist abuse. Sparta Prague has identified the fans who shouted racist insults at Monaco player Aurélien Tchouaméni during a match in the 3rd preliminary round of the Champions League. The club wants to ban the culprits from attending any more matches and is filing a crime report against them. The club has posted a statement to that effect on its official website. “During our investigation we analyzed video footage from the club’s camera system and other footage, as a result of which an investigation was launched against the people who committed that unacceptable behavior. Thanks to our security system, those visitors to the stadium were identified and in the near future, after all the essential steps have been taken, they will be informed that they are forbidden to attend any future matches of AC Sparta Praha. The club is also filing a criminal report,” the announcement posted yesterday reads. Czech decathlete Adam Helcelet, who competed in the men’s decathlon, turned heads at Wednesday’s 100m heats when he stepped onto the track sporting a handlebar mustache. Helcelet’s facial hairstyle, however, is more than just a trend. Sparta Prague have been charged by European soccer’s governing body UEFA over discriminatory behaviour following alleged racist abuse from the Czech club’s fans during their Champions League game against AS Monaco. Monaco beat Sparta Prague 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round, with France Under-21 international Aurelien Tchouameni scoring the opener for the Ligue 1 club. Tchouameni and his team mates then went over to Monaco manager Niko Kovac and UEFA officials, alleging racist chanting from the crowd being directed towards him. In line with UEFA protocols, the game was held up for three minutes, after which a message on the Letna Stadium screen warned that further abuse would lead to the game being stopped.
