A chip, that simply and quickly detects coronavirus infection at an early stage, has been developed by Czech researchers. It can also be used in forensic analysis. In the past 8 months, researchers from the University of Pardubice, in cooperation with the Czech company IQ Structures (IQS Group), have developed a miniature (10x20mm) chip, that can give precision to the test results of a new type of coronavirus. Grooves on the chip’s surface are designed to elicit the reaction with the right dynamics, in order to concentrate the viral RNA. The virus particles are then subject to the sample analysis. The chip has an application area into which a sample is dripped and the chip will evaluate the result. With this approach, a very small amount of viral RNA can be detected in the sample taken, thus individuals can be detected even in the asymptomatic phase of COVID-19. Personal information on more than 500 million Facebook users — previously leaked and now made more widely available — was shared online Saturday, according to the news site Insider, worrying experts who said the compromised data could make people more vulnerable to fraud. The exposed data included details like phone numbers, Facebook IDs, full names, locations, birthdates, bios, and even email addresses of some users. That data included records on 32 million users in the United States, 11 million users in the United Kingdom, six million users in India and 1.4 million in the Czech Republic. A Facebook spokesperson said that the leaked data was scraped due to a vulnerability that the company patched in 2019. Prague’s Public Transit Company (DPP) is testing a new phone application called „Pozor tramvaj!“ that warns pedestrians of oncoming trams as they cross the street. Their goal is to reduce the number of collisions between trams and pedestrians and increase public safety by keeping pedestrians alert and giving trams priority. Within city limits, 97 trams have been equipped with a device that would alert app users within 100 to 120 meters away via Bluetooth. Users can choose between two modes; the default mode would only work when the phone is in use and the other would use vibrations and ringtone alerts to warn pedestrians a tram is approaching even with the app closed and phone’s screen shut off. A spokesperson for DPP says that last year alone there were 47 collisions between pedestrians and trams although fortunately, no injuries resulted in death. The new application is already being piloted on the 9, 11, and 22 tram lines and will continue at least until the end of June. Making use of the latest in 3D printing technology, a Czech start-up is creating tailor-made wheelchairs for dogs which have trouble walking. After helping almost a hundred dogs in Czechia and Slovakia, dog mobility start-up AnyoneGo is now entering the rest of the European market to offer its canine wheelchairs throughout the continent. The start-up’s design team is led by industrial designer Jan Jiránek, who is himself a wheelchair user and has a unique approach to the problems faced by dogs which have problems walking. “The goal is to create dog wheelchairs that are not only functional and easy to use, but also beautiful and adjustable,” says Jiránek. Problems with walking in dogs can be caused by injury, genetics, or just old age. AnyoneGo makes use of the latest technology to produce bespoke wheelchairs which are 90 percent 3D-printed on the machines of another successful Czech technology company, Prusa3D. They protect their health data the most and, compared to other European countries, are more reserved about sharing their location, GPS, and movement data. Contact data (44 percent) is one type of data that Czechs are more willing to share with businesses, services, and applications. Almost two-fifths provide their personal information to third parties. E-commerce fulfillment and technology solutions provider Shipmonk, cofounded by Czech-born Under 30 honoree Jan Bednar, announced that it has a $65 million growth equity investment from Periphas Capital.
