The Prague Technical Administration of Communications (TSK) has started regular maintenance work on Charles Bridge, with restorers and specialists currently removing algae, moss and unwanted vegetation.
The work is aimed at protecting the bridge’s sandstone elements from long-term damage caused by moisture and biological growth.
According to TSK, the maintenance will continue over the coming weeks and will not affect pedestrian access or tourism on one of Prague’s most visited landmarks.
Specialists are carrying out the work using climbing equipment and a support boat, allowing them to reach areas that are difficult to access from the bridge itself. The method enables detailed cleaning while avoiding any need to close the bridge to visitors.
Experts say removing vegetation is an essential part of preserving Charles Bridge. Plants and microorganisms growing on the stone surface can retain moisture, which gradually weakens the masonry and accelerates natural deterioration.
Restorers use traditional cleaning techniques
The maintenance is being carried out manually using traditional restoration methods. Workers remove algae and other growth with controlled water pressure, silicone brushes and specialised tools.
After cleaning the stone surfaces, restorers inspect and repair the joints between individual blocks. Damaged sections are cleaned to a depth of around two to three centimetres before being refilled with traditional lime mortar designed to match historical construction techniques.
Charles Bridge is among the most valuable architectural landmarks in the Czech Republic. Construction began on July 9, 1357, under the reign of Emperor Charles IV, after the previous Judith Bridge was destroyed by floods.
