Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey attracted film fans from across Europe to Prague, where Cinema City Flora hosted a sold-out 70mm IMAX premiere.
Tickets for the opening night sold out within hours of going on sale, with visitors traveling from several countries to experience the film as Nolan intended.
The adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic has been among the year’s most anticipated releases since its announcement. While its cast and source material generated significant attention, much of the excitement centered on its technical achievement.
The Odyssey is the first feature film shot entirely on 70mm IMAX film, making screenings in compatible theaters exceptionally rare.
Cinema City Flora is among roughly four dozen cinemas worldwide equipped to project 70mm IMAX film. Until earlier this month, it was the only venue in continental Europe with that capability.
Following the opening of new theaters in France and Belgium, it is now one of just three across mainland Europe still offering the format. It also remains the continent’s longest-operating 70mm IMAX venue.
Because 70mm IMAX projectors are no longer manufactured and require specialized maintenance, very few cinemas can continue operating the technology.
That scarcity has turned Prague into a destination for moviegoers willing to travel hundreds, and in some cases thousands, of kilometers to see major releases in their original presentation.
Set after the conclusion of the 10-year Trojan War, the story follows the hero Odysseus (Matt Damon) as he returns to Ithaca, a journey that takes nearly as much time as the war.
Borrowing from the Greek tradition of oral storytelling, Nolan’s nearly three-hour adaptation is told through the accounts of a bard (played by Travis Scott) who spins tales of the great warrior and Odysseus himself as he reflects on the events of his homecoming voyage.
