The Czech Republic is set for one of its most demanding fixtures at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where it will face Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, recently renamed Estadio Banorte.

The match is scheduled for June 25 at 03:00 local time and will take place in a stadium widely regarded as one of football’s most historic venues.

The Azteca is the only stadium to have hosted two World Cup finals and will once again be part of the tournament schedule as the competition marks its 60th anniversary.

Located on the outskirts of Mexico City, the stadium has been central to some of football’s most defining moments.

It hosted the 1970 World Cup semi-final between Italy and West Germany, often referred to as the “match of the century.”

Sixteen years later, it became the stage for Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” goal and his second strike against England in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final, later known as the “Goal of the Century.”

Earlier still, Pelé lifted the World Cup trophy there with Brazil in 1970. These events are still commemorated inside the stadium with dedicated plaques.

Beyond its sporting legacy, the Estadio Azteca is also an engineering landmark. Designed by architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, the massive reinforced concrete structure was built to withstand seismic activity common in the region. It survived major earthquakes in 1985 and again in 2017 without significant structural damage.

The stadium’s altitude adds another layer of difficulty for visiting teams. Sitting at around 2,200 metres above sea level, the thinner air affects physical performance, particularly in high-intensity matches. Teams often struggle to maintain tempo and stamina under these conditions, making it one of the most challenging environments in international football.

For the Czech national team, the encounter with Mexico is expected to be one of the toughest group-stage tests. The challenge goes beyond the opponent itself, combining historical pressure, altitude, and the scale of the venue.
