Prague's Día de Muertos Festival Returns to Holešovice on November 5th

Prague’s Holešovice Market will host the fifth annual Día de Muertos festival on November 5, bringing Mexican food, live music, traditional decorations and family activities.

The event, organized in cooperation with Jarritos and Nuevo Progreso, will run from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Halls 13 and 11 will host a Mexican market and a carnival for children.

Visitors can arrive throughout the day, with the food stalls opening at lunchtime.

The selection will include Mexican and South American specialties, tortillas, grilled dishes and Jarritos soft drinks. A special beer brewed by Falcon brewery for the occasion will also be available.

The food zone will remain open until 10 p.m., giving visitors time to sample different dishes and explore the festival’s other attractions.

One of the main attractions will be a traditional ofrenda, or Day of the Dead altar, prepared by the Mexican Embassy. Decorated with photographs, flowers, candles and personal objects, the altar will introduce visitors to the traditions behind the holiday.

Día de Muertos is dedicated to remembering deceased family members and loved ones.

In Mexican tradition, the holiday celebrates their continuing place in family life and the belief that their spirits return to visit the living. Its customs differ from Halloween, combining remembrance with food, music, flowers and colorful decorations.

Hall 11 will become the PEDRO Kids’ Zone from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a program designed for children and families.

Activities will include dance workshops, Mexican music, crafts, stories about the holiday and a game in which children throw balls at illuminated skulls. Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet a Xoloitzcuintle, the Mexican hairless dog traditionally associated with guiding souls to the afterlife.

Costumes are welcome, and the organizers have divided the program into six one-hour sessions beginning at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Admission costs CZK 100 per person for adults and children aged three and older. Tickets are available through GoOut and at the venue, subject to availability. Each ticket covers one hour of activities, after which visitors can explore the rest of the festival.

The program will also feature mariachi musicians, stilt walkers, colorful masks and costumes, and a festival parade. DJs will provide music throughout the day, while a screening of the animated film Coco will offer another introduction to Mexican traditions surrounding death and remembrance.
