FC Twente and Czechia midfielder Michal Sadílek will not play in the European Championship in Germany after falling off a bike and hurting his leg, the national team’s spokesperson said on Sunday.
The 25-year-old featured in the last Euros in 2021. He has played 24 matches for his country and scored one goal.
On Friday, Sadílek captained the side and played the full 90 minutes in a 7-1 victory over Malta in a warm-up friendly.
“Sadílek unfortunately fell while riding his bike and suffered a laceration in the leg,” the national team’s spokesperson said in a statement.
“This is a big setback for us, because Michal is one of our experienced players,” Czech Republic coach Ivan Hasek said. “It was not without reason that he wore the captain’s armband during the match against Malta.”
The Czech Republic will play North Macedonia in a friendly on Monday before starting their Euros 2024 campaign against Portugal in Group F on June 18.
They were knocked out by Denmark in the quarter-finals of Euro 2020.
