Inside the Mind: A Conversation with Neuropsychologist Helena Reina Calzado
Prague Morning
For many people, years of struggling with concentration, memory, or organisation are dismissed as personality traits or everyday stress.
It is often only when life becomes more demanding that they begin to wonder whether something else is going on.
That is where Helena Reina Calzado comes in.
A clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist based in Prague, Helena works with English- and Spanish-speaking patients, providing neuropsychological assessment and cognitive intervention for children, adolescents, and adults experiencing difficulties with attention, memory, executive functioning, and other cognitive abilities.
“Neuropsychology studies the relationship between the brain and behaviour,” Helena explains.
“We look at how someone thinks, processes information, pays attention, and solves problems, and then use that understanding to guide assessment and treatment.”

Neuropsychological assessment focuses on cognitive functioning. The process typically begins with a detailed clinical interview, followed by standardised tests tailored to the person’s specific concerns. When appropriate, neuropsychological intervention aims to improve everyday
cognitive functioning and help patients adapt to daily challenges.
One of the most common reasons people seek her help is a long history of unexplained difficulties that have never been fully understood.
“I often see adults who have spent years developing strategies to cope with attention or learning difficulties without realising there may be an underlying neurodevelopmental condition,” she says.
Conditions such as ADHD or specific learning disorders can go unnoticed well into adulthood, particularly among people who have learned to compensate for their challenges. Many continue functioning successfully until increased stress, career demands, or major life changes make those coping strategies harder to maintain.
“People often come for an assessment because something has changed,” Helena explains. “The strategies that worked for years suddenly aren’t enough, and they want to understand why.”
While awareness of mental health has grown significantly in recent years, Helena believes neuropsychology remains relatively unfamiliar to many people.
“People are much more open to talking about mental health than they were a decade ago,” she says. “But neuropsychology is still less well known. The more accurate information people have, the easier it becomes to challenge misconceptions.”
Outside the consulting room, she also finds moments of perspective in Prague. “Sometimes you forget how beautiful it is,” she says with a smile. “Then you go up to a rooftop, look around, and think, ‘Wow.'”
