Metro D Moves Ahead with Design Contest for Písnice and Pankrác

Prague Morning

Prague’s Metro D project is entering another phase, with the city’s transport authority preparing to launch architectural and artistic competitions for two future stations.

The Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) expects to announce the competitions in September, according to Deputy Mayor Jaromír Beránek, who oversees transport.

One competition will focus on the complete interior design of the future Písnice station, while another will commission a major artwork for the Pankrác station.

Officials held an introductory meeting for both competitions this week. The winning proposals are expected to be selected before the end of the year.

For Písnice, DPP plans to organize an open competition that could attract architects and designers from abroad. The goal is to create the station’s overall interior appearance. In contrast, the competition for Pankrác will be more limited, with five invited artists competing to design a single artistic feature for the station.

The city has already used similar competitions to shape several Metro D stations. Designs have previously been selected for Libuš, Pankrác D, Olbrachtova, Nádraží Krč, Nemocnice Krč, and Nové Dvory.

After the Písnice competition is completed, DPP also plans to select designs for Náměstí Míru, Depo Písnice, and Náměstí Bratří Synků. Before work begins on the latter station’s appearance, the transport company intends to hold a broader urban planning and architectural competition covering the surrounding public square.

Metro D is designed to connect Písnice with Náměstí Míru, improving public transport in southern Prague and easing pressure on existing routes. Construction of the first section, between Pankrác and Olbrachtova, began in 2022.

Work on the second section, stretching from Olbrachtova to Nové Dvory, was delayed for more than two and a half years after repeated legal challenges to the public tender before the Czech competition authority. Construction on that section finally started last week.
