- The Czech Republic and another six EU countries called for a faster process of EU enlargement into the Western Balkans, in a declaration adopted at the foreign ministers’ meeting in Austria yesterday, according to the APA Austrian news agency.
- The Czech government will on Wednesday discuss a draft law that should put into practice a package aimed at consolidating the public finances, the Czech News Agency reported on Sunday. The proposal, which amends more than 60 laws, contains measures that require legislative changes.
- A memorial for the victims of the Nazi atrocity at the Czech village of Ležáky in East Bohemia was held on Sunday. The last survivor of the 1942 tragedy, Jarmila Dolezalova, laid 11 white roses at the memorial, symbolizing the 11 children murdered in Ležáky as part of retaliation for the killing of the Germans’ regional governor.
- European cities have seen a year-on-year deterioration of more than 50% in traffic congestion. In Prague specifically, drivers spend an average of 57 hours a year in rush hour traffic. Smaller Czech cities are also increasingly plagued by traffic jams – for example, drivers in České Budějovice spent 35 hours a year.
- Czechia is not in a conventional war with Russia, but it is engaged in an information war, Czech President Petr Pavel said in his opening speech at the Media and Ukraine conference in Prague on Thursday.
