  • The lower house of Parliament on Wednesday approved an amendment to the Road Traffic Act that will make it possible to drive a car from the age of 17, but only under the supervision of a mentor. The mentor must have held a driving licence for at least ten years, not lost it in the last five years and have no criminal record.

 

  • Hollywood star Russell Crowe, who is one of the main guests at this year’s edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, arrived in the West Bohemian spa town on Wednesday afternoon. Crowe will receive Karlovy Vary’s Crystal Globe for outstanding artistic direction to world cinema at the opening of the festival’s 57th edition.

 

  • The Czech hockey Hall of Fame, which was unexpectedly closed at the end of May, will reopen in Prague’s Palladium shopping centre next year, president of the hockey federation Alois Hadamczik said in an interview for CNN Prima News on Wednesday.

 

  • Today the Chamber of Deputies will vote on a bill to legalise same-sex marriage in the Czech Republic. The vote was preceded by a lengthy debate in the political sphere, between lawmakers who lean towards the liberal west or the conservative east when it comes to LGBTQI+ issues.

 

  • The average price of a newly-built apartment in the Czech Republic has skyrocketed by up to 192% in the past decade, making it increasingly difficult for many citizens to afford homeownership. This situation calls for private companies and municipalities to work together to find new forms of cooperation that will help increase the availability of affordable housing.
