NeverMore 68 Will Tell the Stories of Those Who Fled After the Invasion

Prague Morning

The Prague Exhibition Grounds will host the fifth edition of the NeverMore 68 festival on August 21, marking the anniversary of the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia.

This year’s event will focus on one of the occupation’s most lasting consequences: the forced departure of hundreds of thousands of people who left the country in search of freedom.

Held under the theme “Stories of Those Who Were Missing Here”, the festival will highlight the lives of both well-known figures and ordinary citizens who emigrated after the Soviet-led invasion. Their absence had a profound impact on Czechoslovak families, culture, science, education and public life.

NeverMore 68 has become one of the Czech Republic’s largest events dedicated to remembering the events of 1968 and their consequences. The festival combines historical reflection with discussions about democracy, freedom and the importance of preserving collective memory.

Festival will explore the impact of emigration after 1968

The one-day programme will include discussions with historians, journalists and witnesses of the period, exhibitions, documentary screenings and a special broadcast by Czech Radio Radiožurnál.

A central theme will be the experience of those who left Czechoslovakia after the invasion and the consequences their departure had on society. The festival will also examine how migration shaped Czech and Slovak communities abroad and influenced the country’s development for decades.

Exhibitions and discussions will examine life under communism

Visitors will be able to attend exhibitions dedicated to Czechoslovak emigrants and people persecuted by the communist regime.

The Memory of the Nation project will present stories of notable exiles, while the Museum of Memory of the 20th Century will focus on the work of painter Pavel Vošický.

The Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes will present the exhibition “Spies! Kulaks! Fascists! Czechs and Czechoslovakians in the Sights of the Soviet Secret Police.”

Other organisations will present personal stories connected with resistance, persecution and the search for freedom. The programme will include interactive installations such as Maps of Occupation and Mosaic of Stories, which will introduce visitors to individual experiences of people who left their homeland.

The NeverMore 68 festival will take place on August 21 at Výstaviště Praha. Admission is free.
