Prague Adds 18 Kilometers of Cycle Routes but Cycling Numbers Barely Rise
Prague Morning
Prague is continuing to expand its cycling infrastructure, but the number of recorded bicycle journeys across the city has remained largely unchanged.
Automatic counters installed on major cycling routes recorded about 5.6 million passages in 2025, roughly 1 percent fewer than the previous year.
After adjusting for counter failures and temporary route closures, however, the Technical Road Administration (TSK) calculated a 0.4 percent increase in cycling traffic.
Prague Adds 18 Kilometers of Routes Away From Traffic
The city added 18 kilometers of two-way cycle paths and other cycling routes separated from motor traffic during the year. The total length of marked cycling routes increased by one kilometer to approximately 550 kilometers.
Routes separated from car traffic now account for 263 kilometers of the network, an increase of seven kilometers compared with the previous year.
TSK operates automatic counters at 31 locations on Prague’s main cycling routes. The devices use induction loops or radar to record cyclists and can determine their direction of travel.
The largest increase in two-way cycling routes came over the past year. Their combined length grew from 63 to 81 kilometers. These routes allow cyclists to travel in both directions on streets that are otherwise one-way for motor vehicles.
New two-way routes were added mainly in Prague 7 around Letná, in Prague 5 in Barrandov, and in Prague 6 around Na Petynce, Rozdělovská and Podbaba.
Modřany Remains Prague’s Busiest Cycling Route
The highest number of cyclists was recorded in Modřany, at the intersection of Vltavanů and U Kino streets. The counter registered 578,016 passages during the year.
Another 540,656 cycling journeys were recorded on Povltavská Street south of Troja Castle.
The largest year-on-year increase was recorded on the Barrandov Bridge, where cycling traffic rose following the completion of its more than two-year reconstruction.
