Prague Is Turning a Historic Factory Chimney Into an Observation Deck

A glass elevator will carry visitors through the preserved chimney of a former distillery before emerging above its rim to reveal views of the city.
Inside the developing Lihovar district in Smíchov, a historic factory chimney is being transformed into a viewing platform, with visitors set to travel through the structure in a panoramic glass elevator.
The chimney, which stands approximately 50 meters tall, is part of the former Zlíchov distillery. Rather than demolishing the industrial landmark, developers have incorporated it into the redevelopment of the site.
The project is being developed by Trigema, which is building the new Lihovar district on the former distillery grounds.
The elevator itself is one of the project’s most unusual features. Once it reaches the top of the chimney, the cabin will lift a special cap weighing approximately 500 kilograms, allowing it to rise above the chimney’s opening.
The glass cabin will then serve as an observation deck, offering a 360-degree view of Prague.
From industrial site to new Prague district
The Lihovar development is being built on the site of the former Zlíchov distillery in Prague 5. The redevelopment includes new buildings alongside the preservation of selected elements of the original industrial complex.
The factory chimney is among the structures being retained. Another is the historic former brewhouse, which is planned for cultural use.
The opening date for the observation deck has not been announced.
