Bollywood and Beyond: Prague Indian Film Festival Returns for Its 23rd Edition

The Prague Indian Film Festival will return for its 23rd edition from October 8 to 10, bringing a selection of recent Indian films to Kino Světozor.

The festival will open with a historical drama and feature Bollywood, arthouse cinema, a Sundance-winning film and a vampire comedy.

The festival opens on Thursday, October 8, in the presence of the Ambassador of India with Main Vaapas Aaunga, directed by Imtiaz Ali.

Set against the Partition of British India in 1947, the film follows a young Sikh man and his Muslim girlfriend whose lives are transformed by the political upheaval of the period.

Friday’s program will offer two very different takes on contemporary Indian cinema. Bollywood fans can see Cocktail 2, a romantic comedy about a love triangle starring Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna. The film follows the successful 2012 movie Cocktail.

The festival will also screen Cactus Pears, an arthouse drama set in a remote village in Maharashtra. The story follows a man who returns home after his father’s death and, while observing traditional mourning rituals, reconnects with a childhood friend.

The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, where it drew attention for its portrayal of a relationship that goes beyond friendship.

Saturday afternoon will once again be dedicated to popular Indian films from the 1990s and 2000s. This year’s selection is Rang De Basanti, the 2006 film starring Aamir Khan.

The film has also gained renewed attention in India in connection with recent student protests. Festival art director Radim Špaček said he followed the demonstrations online and saw Rang De Basanti become one of the films associated with the movement.

Saturday evening will take a turn toward horror with Thamma, which combines comedy, horror and vampire folklore. The film stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, who also appears in Cocktail 2. It is directed by Aditya Sarpotdar.

Dance will also be a major part of the festival program. The accompanying Indian Dance Festival will feature workshops and masterclasses with instructors from around the world, culminating in the Bollywood Fiesta dance gala at Prague’s Rokoko Theatre on Sunday, October 11.

The festival will also feature Indian food, cinema decorations by Sanu Babu and a Bollywood dance party on Saturday night. DJ Dance Sandeep will perform at Theatro Music Club at the Karlín Music Theatre.
