No Price Cap, No Limits: Tourist Charged CZK 8,000 for a 3 km Taxi Ride

Prague received 70 complaints from taxi passengers during a three-week period when the city’s maximum taxi fares were temporarily not in force, according to information published by the Chamber of Taxi Service Operators.

The complaints included several cases involving foreign visitors who were charged thousands of crowns for relatively short journeys. In one of the most extreme cases, a passenger paid CZK 8,096 for a 3.2-kilometre trip from Duplex Club to Na Františku Hospital.

Another passenger was charged CZK 9,955 for a journey through Prague but was reportedly unable to provide the exact route when filing a complaint. The published list of cases shows that, with one exception, the complaints involved foreign tourists.

Among the other reported fares were more than CZK 7,500 for journeys of around 15 kilometres between central Prague and Václav Havel Airport.

According to the list, a passenger travelling from the city centre to the airport paid CZK 7,560 for a 15-kilometre journey. A similar trip from Smetana Embankment cost CZK 7,554.

The issue was highlighted by the Chamber of Taxi Service Operators, which asked Prague City Hall how many complaints had been submitted during the period when fare limits were not being applied.

“There were 70 in total. Some of them really did not hold back,” Štěpán Hradečný, speaking on behalf of the chamber, wrote on Facebook.

Prague City Hall confirmed that the complaints related to the period when taxi price regulation was temporarily absent.

“These complaints relate to a period when taxi price regulations were not in effect. When prices are not regulated by the city, the only regulator is the market itself,” City Hall spokesperson Vít Hofman told *Blesk*.

The situation followed the removal of Prague’s maximum taxi fare limits on September 30. According to Prague Deputy Mayor for Transport Jaromír Beránek of the Pirate Party, the move was not intended as a political decision by the city’s leadership.

Beránek said he had asked the relevant department to prepare materials for a discussion on taxi fare regulation. Instead, the preparatory process resulted in the limits being removed altogether.

The price caps remained absent until October 20, leaving a 21-day period during which taxi fares were not subject to the city’s maximum limits.
