Public transport in Prague is moving more slowly as high temperatures and a seasonal timetable combine to affect operations across the network.

The Prague Integrated Transport system introduced widespread tram speed reductions over the weekend in response to record heat. The measures affect the entire city network.

According to transport authorities, extreme temperatures cause overhead lines to expand and sag, which limits safe operating speeds.

In some underpasses, trams are restricted to around 10 km/h. Across the wider network, the general limit has been reduced to 40 km/h as a precaution linked to track tension and safety conditions.

Prague Public Transport Company spokesperson Daniel Šabík confirmed that the measures continue across the network. He said the reduced speed applies citywide, with even lower limits in underpasses and at selected crossings.

Transport operators have also pointed to passenger comfort during hot weather, recommending metro travel where possible.

In a public message, Prague Integrated Transport noted that underground lines remain less affected by heat, as they are shielded from temperature-related technical issues affecting surface transport.

Alongside the heat-related restrictions, a summer timetable has been introduced. This results in longer intervals between services across trams, buses and metro lines. The seasonal schedule typically reduces capacity during holiday periods when demand is more evenly spread throughout the day.
