Prague Expands Tram Network With Five Projects Underway

Prague is expanding its tram network, with five projects now under construction across the capital.

Two new projects began in October 2026, extending the network from Malovanka to Strahov and from Libuš to Nové Dvory.

Work is also progressing on the tram line across Wenceslas Square, where the tracks have been connected between Vinohradská Street and the junction of Jindřišská and Vodičkova streets.

The projects aim to improve public transport connections to developing residential areas and strengthen links with other transport services, including the future Metro Line D.

New tram line to connect Malovanka with Strahov

Construction of the new tram line from Malovanka to Strahov began on October 5, following preparatory work. The tracks will run along Vaníčkova Street, starting at Bělohorská Street and continuing toward Strahov Stadium.

The Malovanka stop will also be modified and moved to a position before the intersection, allowing it to serve trams heading toward Strahov.

The existing Stadion Strahov stop, currently used for passengers to disembark, will be renamed Strahov.

Tram extension to Nové Dvory will complement Metro Line D

Construction of the second new line, extending the tram network from Modřany through Libuš to Nové Dvory, began on October 7, 2026.

The extension will introduce two stops, Přírodní and Nové Dvory. At Nové Dvory, the line will end in a loop using Durychova, Libušská and Chýnovská streets.

The new connection is being developed alongside plans for Metro Line D and the wider expansion of the surrounding residential area. It will provide a direct tram connection to central Prague, including the Palackého náměstí area, with a future connection toward Smíchov also planned.

The extension will change operations on tram line 17. Once the project is completed, the temporary dead-end terminus in Libuš will be removed, allowing single-ended trams to return to longer routes. A second tram line is also planned for the new tracks after Metro Line D opens.

Hodkovičky gains a new tram stop

The new Hodkovičky stop, located between Belárie and Černý kůň, is another addition to Prague’s tram infrastructure in the south of the city.

The stop is intended to improve access to public transport for residents of the growing residential developments nearby. Further housing construction is also expected in Nové Dvory, where the planned tram extension will provide additional transport capacity.

Tram tracks connected across Wenceslas Square

Work on restoring tram services across Wenceslas Square is also progressing. In early autumn, construction crews connected the tracks running from Vinohradská Street, past the National Museum, across the square and toward the junction of Jindřišská and Vodičkova streets.

The track infrastructure in this section is complete. Remaining work includes finishing the surrounding surfaces and installing overhead power lines.
Once these works are finished, the new line will restore tram services across Wenceslas Square, strengthening public transport connections in central Prague.
