Prague's Petřín Funicular to Return to Service on September 22

Prague’s Petřín funicular will resume passenger service on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, following a two-year reconstruction of the railway and its infrastructure, the Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) has announced.
Service will begin at 7 a.m., with the new fourth-generation cars departing from both Újezd and Petřín stations.
Trains will then run according to the regular timetable, with departures every 10 minutes until 10:15 p.m.
The reopening comes almost exactly two years after the previous funicular was taken out of service. The third-generation cars made their final journey on September 13, 2024, after prolonged heavy rainfall destabilized and eroded sections of the hillside.
New cars increase capacity
The two new cars were designed by Czech designer Anna Marešová and built by Swiss manufacturer CWA Constructions SA. The vehicles cost a combined CZK 137.7 million and were delivered to Prague in April.
Each car can carry up to 120 passengers, compared with a capacity of 100 on the previous vehicles. The design also introduces glass roofs, giving passengers a clearer view of Petřín Hill during the journey.
Air conditioning, however, will not be installed. Because of technical limitations, the cars will instead use forced-air ventilation. The decision has already drawn criticism from some Prague residents, who have questioned how comfortable the cars will be during hot summer days, particularly given their large glass roofs.
The two-year reconstruction involved more than replacing the vehicles. Workers strengthened the foundations beneath the track, installed new rails and upgraded the funicular’s traction system.
How much will the new funicular cost?
A single journey will cost CZK 100 when purchased on site. Passengers using the PID Lítačka mobile application will pay CZK 90.
Passengers with valid long-term Prague public transport passes covering one month to one year will continue to ride without paying an additional fare.
The same applies to holders of 24-hour and 72-hour passes, children under 15 and passengers aged over 65.
