American Man Suspected of Racist Assault at Prague's Želivského Stop

Police are investigating an alleged racist assault at the Želivského tram and metro stop in Prague’s Vinohrady district after an English-speaking man reportedly attacked a passerby and damaged his phone.

The suspect has since been identified, although police have not confirmed reports linking him to an American previously detained in Russia.

The incident took place on the morning of November 4 on Vinohradská Street, close to the Želivského stop.

According to the victim, an Arab man who has lived in the Czech Republic for several years, the confrontation began when a stranger started shouting racist remarks in public.

The man allegedly called for the deaths of Black people, Jews and Arabs.

The victim challenged the statements, telling the stranger that racist abuse and threats against people because of their background were unacceptable.

He then began recording the encounter on his mobile phone, fearing that the situation could turn violent.

“I started recording in case I was attacked—and, unfortunately, that is exactly what happened,” he later wrote in the Facebook group Vinohradská parta.

Footage of the confrontation shows the alleged attacker directing insults at the victim. At one point, he raises his phone and says, “Hello, Trump?” He also appears to threaten the other man with death before the confrontation turns physical.

The suspect then allegedly grabbed the victim’s mobile phone and threw it into the road. According to the victim, the device was struck by a passing truck. Although he managed to recover it, the phone was damaged.

The victim said he had reported the incident to the police and called on local residents to help identify the alleged attacker.

“I am dealing with this through the police, but the perpetrator has vanished. Let’s find him and show that violence and racism have no place in Vinohrady,” he wrote.

The original Facebook post containing the video was subsequently removed. The victim suggested that its disappearance might have been connected to the ongoing police investigation.

Police later confirmed that they were dealing with the case as a suspected criminal offence.

“We are handling the matter as a suspected criminal offense, and we have identified the suspect,” police spokesperson Eva Kropáčová told Czech tabloid Blesk.

Suspect reportedly linked to Russia

The investigation has also raised questions about the man’s identity.

The suspect could be an American citizen who previously faced criminal proceedings in Russia and was ordered by a Russian court to undergo compulsory psychiatric treatment.

The man was reportedly accused of assaulting a female police officer in Russia. Media reports have also suggested that he holds Czech citizenship and travelled from Russia to Prague, where he is currently staying.

However, Czech police have not confirmed whether the individual identified in connection with the Želivského incident is the same American mentioned in the Russian case.
