GALLERY: Light Installation "Synapse" Coming to Florenc Metro Station

Jan Poš light installation Synapse will go on display in the Florenc Line C metro passage at the end of September.

The artwork will track passengers’ movements and complement the existing Battle of Sokolovo mosaic. Prague city councillors approved around CZK 1.38 million in funding to complete and install the artwork.

“Synapse” is a light-based installation by visual artist Jan Poš (1996) and the winning entry in the “Light for the Metro” competition held in 2023.

The aim was to create a light artwork for the passage connecting the north and south concourses of Florenc metro station. A total of 23 artists and teams submitted proposals, with four advancing to the final stage, which was conducted as a competitive dialogue.

The five-member jury considered the artwork’s long-term maintenance and its ability to withstand demanding operating conditions.

According to Poš, the artwork, installed on the wall opposite the underpass’s main staircase, comes into view as metro passengers ascend or descend the stairs.

It becomes part of their daily journey while remaining elegantly set apart, creating a space where it can stand on its own and offer a moment of respite from the hustle and bustle.

Poš says the work’s format and style enliven and build on the Battle of Sokolovo mosaic, creating a bridge between the past and present of the city.

The artwork was originally due to be installed alongside the completion of the reconstruction of the station’s ceiling slab. Prague’s public transport operator, DPP, has been repairing the structure since 2022 due to corrosion.
