Senate Proposal: Doctors Could Limit Life-Prolonging Treatment for Terminal Patients
The Czech Senate is preparing amendments that would allow doctors to refrain from sustaining the lives of terminally ill patients at all costs and instead focus on easing suffering and respecting patient wishes. The proposal would amend the law on medical services and introduce the concept of “inadequate treatment” — situations where therapy is ineffective, increases suffering, or places an excessive burden on the patient.
Weapons Amnesty: Czech Police Collect Nearly 800 Illegal Firearms in One Month
During the first month of the ongoing weapons amnesty, Czech police collected almost 800 illegally held weapons, along with ammunition and some explosives. The largest number of cases was reported in Prague and the Central Bohemian Region. The amnesty, running until the end of June, allows people to surrender illegal firearms without explanation or legal consequences.

Sugary Drink Tax Debate: Possible Increase From 12% to 20% Under Discussion
The Czech Republic is debating a potential increase in the tax on sugary drinks from 12% to 20%. Supporters argue the move could improve public health while bringing more than CZK 1 billion annually into the state budget. Studies cited in the debate link regular consumption of sweetened beverages to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Around one in ten people in the country reportedly drinks sugary beverages daily, and overall sugar intake remains well above recommended levels.

Tom Odell, Lykke Li and Balu Brigada have been added to the 2026 line-up of Metronome Prague, organisers announced on Thursday.The newly confirmed acts join performers already revealed for this year’s edition, including Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Sting, Jade, or Manic Street Preachers. The event will take place from June 19 to 21 at Letňany Airport, after relocating this year from its former home at the Výstaviště grounds.
