It’s best to be prepared if you’re going to a zero-waste store for the first time. Forget about grocery shopping as you know it. No filling up the basket with things you don’t necessarily need because “what if?” or “just in case…”. You come here only when you know exactly what you need and the specific quantity. No wastage allowed.
Two zero-waste chains are currently in operation in Prague, where you can go to replenish supplies making sure you produce the absolute minimum amount of waste. Not only does this lifestyle help the environment, but it also has a positive effect on the domestic budget.
The pilot store was opened in Vinohrady, Prague. As the number of zero-waste lifestyle supporters and enthusiasts grew, they decided to open a second store in autumn 2017, this time in Prague 6.
As far as the range of products is concerned, you will get quality food at both branches, as well as cosmetics and toiletries at the Dejvice branch. There is also the option for self-service.
But as you might read on the website, Bezobalu is not just a “business”. It’s a non-profit organization that aims to spread the concept of a zero-waste lifestyle among the public. They organize workshops, have published a book called “household without waste”, and have devoted research to “waste-free” sales. You can also sign up for their public awareness campaign at cosemistalo.cz.

The Nebaleno store in Prague’s Nusle district is run by couple Alex Čepek and Jana Humlová. Since Autumn 2016, people have visited their store for organic drugs and natural cosmetics. Their products are selected based on quality, and they collaborate with certified vendors who do not test on animals.
Another advantage is that if you happen to have forgotten the necessary containers for the produce you buy, the store will be happy to lend you some.
- Address: Jaromírova 726/15, Prague 2 – Nusle
- Opening hours: Mon & Wed 10:00-18:00, Tue & Thu 10:00-19:00, Fri 10:00-17:00
People might think that shopping without producing any waste or purchasing any kind of packaging is tricky, but that’s not the case. You do not need any special and expensive equipment. Often, you only need boxes and jars that you probably already have at home.
The result of adopting a zero-waste lifestyle is that you will no longer have any unnecessary or expired food lying around untouched in your kitchen. You’ll have better control over your domestic budget, and most importantly, you will be doing something good for our planet.
