Richard’s philosophy has not changed over the years. “What I want to achieve,” he says, “is a balance and a harmony and flavors.” Zem: Czech bistronomy with an Asian twist Richard’s new adventure is truly a balance of Czech and Asian cuisine. What if I told you that the question of where to find the best burgers in Prague has finally been answered? If you haven’t guessed yet, the place is John Polpo, a cozy and comfortable new bistro in Žižkov. Here, you can have coffee, play board games, work, drink some craft beer, eat desserts, celebrate a birthday, and most importantly, eat delicious burgers. Arthur, the owner of John Polpo, along with his wife Olga, have long dreamed of opening a business of their own. The first space they found was on Seifertova street. It was there that they decided to develop the concept of a craft burger bistro with high-quality ingredients. At their new location, much larger than the original space, they offer plenty of room for takeaway orders as well a dining space. When I visited for myself, we got the menu very quickly and the service was on point. The order itself took about 10 minutes, which is an excellent time period. There are five burgers on the menu ranging from the John Bacon burger to the burger with gorgonzola, pear, and beef. My personal preference is the “Full House XXL Meat”. The burger itself is large (you...
Not everyone has the same tastes; there are those who prefer the color blue to red, salty food to sweet or stay on the couch instead of going for a run first thing in the morning. But can there be anyone who doesn’t like a good poké bowl? I don’t think so. Prepared to order using fresh-daily ingredients, the “poké” dish is primarily composed of the same elements used to make sushi (rice, raw fish, seaweed, and more) meaning, the dish is nutritious and delicious. The best of them all? Prague’s PokeHaus and their brand new location. The flagship location at Národní třída is situated around the corner from Quadrio Shopping Center, which is best known for one of Prague’s most visited attractions: Franz Kafka’s head as sculpted by David Černý. PokeHaus, in keeping with the spirit of Quadrio’s design heritage, has crafted a space that is an artistic statement of its own. Authentic & remindful of its Hawaiian-Japanese culinary roots, the location will greet you with visions of a tropical escape. When you enter through the door of PokeHaus you can highlight several things: its large glass window, which generates a cozy atmosphere of freedom, its large stone bar...
Switching to quality gastronomy combined with greening measures in restaurants will be key factors in reviving the Czech hospitality industry in the post-pandemic era, as tourists have now become more demanding in several aspects. “It’s no longer mainly the sights or attractions, but it’s the holistic experience that tourists consider when deciding where to go. And gastronomy is fundamental in their decision making,” said Luboš Kastner, a co-owner of restaurants in the Pilsen region. Kastner explained that as a result, tourists tend to favour those areas and sights where they can also find quality dining options. “They [tourists] prefer to go to a less attractive tourist destination if they know that they will have a great meal there and get to know any local artisanal specifics related to food and drink,” noting that the current trend for restaurants is the “professionalisation” of gastronomy. “The guest has become more demanding and more interested in gastro during COVID-19 pandemic, perhaps even more educated about it,” he said. Analysts suggest that equally important is tourists’ environmental considerations and what restaurants particularly do about that. As restaurateurs do not have enough budget to implement environmentally-friendly measures, they hope for investments coming from the EU-funded...
Fast food isn’t as affordable as it used to be, and value menus are another victim of inflation and pandemic. The price of a cheeseburger at McDonald’s rose to CZK 39, an increase of about 11%. According to the company, the reason is the increase in the cost of production. “Since the price of raw materials has been rising for a long time, and McDonald’s wants to maintain the standard high quality of products and services, we have had to shift higher costs to the price of cheeseburgers,” said Jitka Paürkova, communications specialist and director of public relations at McDonald’s ČR. The cheeseburger rose in price at the beginning of April, before it was sold for 35 CZK. McDonald’s only specifies recommended prices, so prices for cheeseburgers may differ slightly from place to place. McDonald’s opened its first fast food in the Czech Republic in 1992. At that time, the cheeseburger was sold for 21 CZK. In 2013, the price raised to 25 CZK, four years later to 29 CZK and in 2020, to 33 CZK. In 1993, a Big Mac cost CZK 50, while the average salary was less than 6,000 crowns. But even the high cost did not...
