If there’s one thing you’ll notice right off the bat when moving to Prague, it’s the total lack of diversity when it comes to food. If you’re originally from the United States, you’ll be used to seeing at least 6 different kinds of breakfast cereals, a gourmet aisle (for less than $4) selection of instantly-microwavable food – pretty much choices and variations on everything imaginable. In Prague, however, things work a bit differently. Especially with the communist regime recently tucked into its past, it’s clear to understand why there is such a lack of globalization when it comes to food. After a year, the lack will not be so apparent and you’ll adjust to what’s available to you. You will no longer need many snackable things that you were once accustomed to or relied on – bagels, Doritos, “American cheese” or just mere ziplock bags of all things. You learn to try new things and to adopt new favorites instead. However, when times get tough and you’re craving some familiar treats, there are a few places in the city that can definitely help you out. You’re not the only one who has been missing out on some go-to food that...

Among them, the most popular restaurant outside the city centre, the company with the fastest increase in orders through Bolt Food, the highest number of orders for a single dish and the most popular vegan restaurant. PAPRIKA – Mediterranean Kitchen & Bar won the main category Srdcovka as the most popular restaurant. “We knew to have high ratings in the app, but we really didn’t expect that we would become the most popular restaurant on Bolt Food,” says Alen Levi, the owner of PAPRIKA. “Golden broccoli represents a real appreciation of the hard work of our partner restaurants. It is awarded not by critics, but by users, on the basis of the number of orders, user ratings, and other data from the app collected during last year,” explains Marek Maxa, manager of Bolt Food for the Czech Republic. The best night eatery award went to MATOKA, which offers burgers and Philly cheesesteaks, while the best svíčková Awards Heart (the most popular restaurant) – PAPRIKA – Mediterranean Kitchen & Bar Hidden Treasure (restaurant outside the...

The average cost of meals in Czech restaurants in January was 157 CZK. This is 2 crowns more than in December and 22 crowns more than year-on-year. The study was carried out by Sodexo. The region with the most expensive meals in restaurants was Prague with an average of 176 CZK, while the most accessible one was found in Karlovy Vary Region (CZK 142). The authors of the study note that lunch menus are the main source of income for most Czech restaurants. Business owners complain that the coronavirus epidemic has changed the habits of residents. Around 60% of Czechs in January bought on–the–go meals. The trend is leading to healthy fast foods being offered not just in local shops, but also by online retailers. Another problem is that many regular customers have stopped going to restaurants at all. Due to higher inflation, they prefer to cook at home. Moreover, alcohol consumption last year was the lowest since 1996, while consumption of rice and legumes was the highest since monitoring began in the country. Beer consumption fell by six liters per person year-on-year, to an average of 140 liters per person. Wine consumption fell by half a liter to nearly...
Since autumn 2021, Prague restaurants have been able to use the city’s system of distribution and collection of food waste containers. Unlike bio-waste – the exclusively biodegradable waste of plant origin, food waste also includes residues of food of animal origin (meat, bones, pastries, etc.). It is even possible to dispose of food waste with packaging in the food container. The collected kitchen waste is then processed and used in a biogas plant, producing energy as the primary, and agricultural fertilizer as the secondary product. Consistent separating of food waste could potentially reduce the total volume of municipal waste by up to 20%. Following the pilot project of food waste collection, launched in Prague in December 2019, the capital city came up with the introduction of the kitchen waste collection from school canteens in autumn 2021. Since October 2021, private companies such as restaurants, canteens, bistros, etc. have also been able to join the city’s collection system. The Červený Jelen restaurant has been sorting and collecting food waste since its opening in October 2019. “Food waste collecting is the most expensive of all waste items, but it was still a clear choice for us. We consider food waste sorting to be necessary nowadays,” comments Jiří Bednář, the Červený Jelen (Red Stag) Restaurant...
Products from yeast dough in the form of a ring – bagels are distinguished by a memorable taste. The peculiarity of their preparation is that before baking they are lightly scalded in water. The resulting “bagel” is cut in half to add the filling to the sandwich – it can be the most diverse: both hearty, and sweet, and salty. Originating in Europe, this dish has become almost a cult classic in the United States, and are especially loved by New Yorkers. Bagels with coffee, as a breakfast option (are quick, satisfying, and tasty), often appear in films and books describing American life. In a word, this phenomenon is firmly established in American culture. If you have said at least once in your life: “Can I have everything bagel with cream cheese, toasted”, then you definitely understand what it is about. Today I went to Můj Bagel. When I think about this place my mouth fills with saliva. People come here from other parts of the city just to taste this piece of art in the world of bagels. Můj Bagel has a small but cosy room with only three tables- and have an open kitchen where you can watch...

QQ Asian Kitchen, after opening its doors in 2017, very quickly became one of the most talked-about restaurants in the city. The cuisine – a mixture of food from Bali and Taiwan with several other culinary stops along the way – was not something readily available in Prague. QQ Asian Kitchen became almost immediately successful. The food was excellent and the seats were full. That has not changed. The level of quality at QQ Asian Kitchen remains top-notch. QQ Asian Kitchen’s location, however, did change in the spring of 2020 and is now attached to Mosaic House Design Hotel. A location change for a restaurant with an already fixed reputation could be a risky endeavor, but everything is contingent on the quality of food and service. That, as stated, remains the same. QQ Asian Kitchen is an amazing place to visit and clearly deserves its very recent placement in the Michelin guide. Come hungry and do not skip out on the starters. Some of the most interesting and amazing dishes are to be found there. Seafood lovers should try the soft shell crab mushu taco alongside the seared yellowtail sashimi with butter ponzu vinaigrette. These are both pristine examples of...
