Attention all wine lovers! LÁHVE:, a wine shop with a unique selection of premium but inexpensive wines has opened in Prague. Selling high-quality wines from all over Europe that won’t hurt a budget is LÁHVE:’s biggest priority. The store specializes in wines from five countries (Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic; Spain will be added very soon), and has interesting features that make wine shopping easy and stress-free. The first unique feature of LÁHVE: is that it is the perfect store for introverts. Its consultants won’t nag you during shopping unless you ask for help, and if you do, their staff speaks English, Czech, or Russian. However, the shop’s other features make picking wine without being an expert much easier. The store is divided into zones according to countries that produce the wine, and their price tags don’t just have numbers on them- they also have other additional information: the place and year of wine production, the grape variety, a brief description of the taste, the recommended serving temperature, as well as the most compatible dishes. There’s also a scale of flavor saturation that makes shopping for wines easy and fast. Perhaps the best feature of LÁHVE: is its prices....
Prague is home to a vibrant food scene with restaurants that serve cuisine from all over the globe. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been scouring the best Thai cuisine in the city, part of Thai Select network. No matter what your mood is. NOI is always an ideal choice for an enjoyable and tasty time. Exclusively designed for people seeking harmony, relaxation and delicious healthy Thai cuisine. Restaurant Noi is a little off the regular tourist track so expect to be eating with locals at lunchtime and it’s popular with expats for local business lunches. Food Don’t get this mixed up with what they call “Asian” food. Noi has 100% Thai with gorgeous salads available and if fried glass noodles and shrimps gets you going then this is the place for you. Some may find Thai soups like Tom Yam are too spicy so they have other soups that are just as tasty but, without the heat. First-timers should at least try the mixed starter. Our favorites include: Tom Kah Koong (shrimp/coconut milk soup – not spicy) and Yam Woon Sen (glass noodles shrimp and pork mix). A good choice for those who wish for a dish not as smoking...

More and more people are seriously considering insects as a source of protein. The environmental benefits are manifold, but can regional start-ups in Central and Eastern Europe overcome consumer resistance to the idea that bugs can be food? Eating insects, also known entomophagy, is part of many traditional diets across the world. Insects such as crickets and mealworms are safe for human consumption and are a great source of protein. There are environmental benefits to consider as well. Rearing insects produces less greenhouse gas and uses less land and water compared to livestock. Insects also have a higher “feed conversion” — they can convert feed to protein more efficiently than traditional food animals such as pigs. Globally, there are already many start-ups turning insects such as crickets into food and selling them, either as protein powder made from ground-up bugs or whole – sometimes flavoured, sometimes not. In Central and Eastern Europe, Czechia has emerged as a regional hub for this nascent sector, boasting several high-profile start-ups. One of these is Terraz, producing a new twist on an old favourite — pasta made from cricket flour. Another is Entoway, selling a protein supplement made from plant protein and crickets. “It all...
A statement from the State Veterinary Administration of the Czech Republic reported that the Froneri ice cream factory in Poland, responsible for Milka products, accidentally contaminated several batches with ethylene oxide. A gas used as an antifreeze that is totally flammable with carcinogenic effects. Over 250,000 popsicles have to be withdrawn from Czech stores. These include 250,000 popsicles, 15,000 multipacks of six and eight, and about 37,000 ice creams in 480 ml trays. The products are marked as Milka mini cornet vanilla chocolate 8×25 ml (multipack), Milka mini ice cream vanilla chocolate 6x50ml (multipack), Milka chocolate nut 100 ml, Milka caramel crunch 100 ml, Milka chocolate and vanilla 100 ml and Milka ice cream chocolate vanilla cup 480 ml. Consumption data for defective batches are from 2022 to May 2023. Ethylene oxide can damage DNA and causes cancers including Lymphoma, leukemia, stomach and breast cancer. The possible health risk derives mainly from the direct handling of the substance or from a hypothetical continued consumption in large doses. Czech health authorities advise users who have one of the affected products in their homes to “refrain from consuming them” and return them to where they bought them for a full refund. Froneri,...

Prague is home to a vibrant food scene with restaurants that serve cuisine from all over the globe. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been scouring the best Thai cuisine in the city, part of Thai Select network. Rattanakosin, a new Thai restaurant located just 200 meters from the Anděl Shopping Center — provides an easy answer to both of these questions. The restaurant is located in the basement in the style of a stone wine bar and it offers traditional Thai cuisine combined with modern and attractive gastronomy. The restaurant is full service, but the food is “countryside Thai,” homey and unmodifiable, prepared (no need to say!) by Thai chef Phakhin Kosin. Highlights from the menu include Kung Choop Bpaeng Tod (deep fried Black Tiger prawns served with sweet chili), Kaeng Khiew Wan Kai (green curry with coconut milk, bamboo, and chicken), Kaeng Ped Kai (Red curry chicken with coconut milk and pineapple), while vegetarians can enjoy for example a Pad Thai Tofu (Thai rice noodles with tofu and bean sprout). Diners who seek spice without heat can do no better than the roast pork belly with Bok Choy and fresh chili — or roasted “Mud Crab” with pepper...
How about starting the day with a good dose of inspiration and looking around at what your competitors are doing? We’ve carefully researched the gastronomic newcomers for you and have selected the best seven representatives. Should we get started? The Flat Cafe A slice of British elegance is hidden in Prague’s Vršovice. Here, under the watchful eye of Her Majesty, you can indulge in a traditional English breakfast every morning, with a simple three-egg omelet with cheddar, or, if you prefer something “lighter”, cereal topped with yogurt. You can also stop by for an afternoon “Earl Grey” with a homemade dessert from the weekly menu, or in the evening for a glass of premium gin or a London ale. Kro bistro & bar A new addition to the “Kro family” is the Kro bistro & bar, which opened in Karlín in June. The relaxed summer atmosphere is best enjoyed in their garden with one of their signature drinks in hand and grilled chicken on a plate. Of course, that’s not the only thing they offer here, but to study their menu carefully, we recommend you go there and explore it personally. Spacious interiors, the best-grilled chicken, signature drinks, and...
When it comes to Italian food, Neapolitan pizza cannot be missing. Fasù is run by three Apulia’s natives: besides Francesco, there are Armando and Gianfrancesco. The Fasù pizza maker is Francesco, who built his career in Rome, leading to the success of the first laboratory dedicated to the delivery of quality pizza. His pizza has a long rising, between 48 and 96 hours, to ensure a high digestibility to his customers. “I choose fresh and quality ingredients for the topping of my pizzas. In addition to the taste, it is important to know that a long-rising pizza is a healthy product, which does not weigh down digestion and does not raise blood sugar.” Francesco. Armando arrived directly from Foggia with a secret family recipe in his pocket. His family made their mark with the production of Pizzella and he brought his heritage to Prague. Right here he met Gianfrancesco, a Chef with great experience in the hotel sector and responsible for the launch of Pepe Nero, who opened the doors of his restaurant, L’Osteria, where they experimented with new products, starting from the secret dough, and their special Panzerotto was born. “Working with a Chef was a great fortune. I...
With the growing number of young people who limit their meat consumption, there are more and more restaurants that try to include plant-based dishes in their menus. COVID-19 is also a reason for these dietary changes. According to the latest survey by FMCG Gurus for the Czech Vegan Society, 21 percent of the Czech population is currently flexitarian, i.e. a person who has a primarily vegetarian diet but occasionally eats meat or fish. The numbers have been increasing in recent years. Not only food producers but also restaurateurs are responding to the trend. The reasons for reducing meat consumption are various. Most of the time, it is due to wanting to eat healthier or protect the environment and animals. However, according to some restaurateurs, the trend is also affected by the ongoing pandemic. “A healthier plant-based diet is a huge trend after lockdowns. For me, it is absolutely the biggest megatrend of today,” says Luboš Kastner, co-owner of the restaurant group Hospodska.cz, which has cafes in Prague and Pilsen. He explains this by the fact that Czechia has been behind other European countries in offering plant-based meals at restaurants and is now catching up. At the same time, the pandemic...
