Has there ever been a better time to learn new skills and pick up new hobbies? Cooking allows you to not only maximize the ingredients you’ve stocked up in your kitchen but also helps diversify your meals so that you’re not just eating the same dish every night. Pocha Restaurant in Prague will offer a free online cooking workshop on December 12th. You will get a free meal kit and cook together with the chef online through zoom. “We want to encourage other communities in Prague that are also spreading the Korean culture here in the Czech Republic, to participate in the event – we would like them to give a small introduction of themselves during the online cooking class,” says one of Pocha owners. “Our initial plan was to do a one-to-one cooking class but due to the pandemic situation, we had to change the event into an online cooking class. The cooking class will be held in four different time frames. From 11 am-12 pm Jaeyuk bokkeum, 1 pm-2 pm Bulgogi, from 3 pm to 4 pm a vegetable pancake, from 5 pm to 6 pm Bibimbap.” The event is hosted by the Korean Embassy and the Korean...
One of the fastest-growing categories on the online supermarket Rohlik.cz is coffee. Sales grew 1.5 times faster during the spring and autumn corona crisis than for the same period. “For us, our cooperation with Rohlik.cz is a pilot project on the territory of the Czech Republic to expand our sales channels. What we want is for the customer to be able to order choice Nespresso capsules with home delivery within just 120 minutes, with a delivery accuracy of 15 minutes,” said Nespresso’s Marketing Manager Andrea Petrová about the cooperation. Moreover, members of the loyalty program Nespresso & You don’t lose any of the advantages through buying capsules on Rohlik.cz – since the cooperation also includes earning points on the customer’s Nespresso account for each purchase. “We are delighted with the cooperation with the Nespresso brand. According to the Czech Statistical Office, the food consumption in the Czech Republic last year rose by 1.9 percent, amounting to 796.5 kilograms per capita. Compared to last year, it rose by 1.9 percent. “Historically, the highest consumption per capita was achieved last year in the consumption of rice, namely 6.7 kilograms, then in poultry meat 29 kilograms, cheese 13.8 kilograms, other dairy products 35.2 kilograms and southern fruit 37.5 kilograms,” said Renata Vodičková, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Forestry Statistics. Meat consumption rose to 80.3 kilos, that’s around twice the average of 1950 consumption. On the contrary, the consumption of bread, rabbit meat, milk, and salt decreased. Year-on-year, the consumption of mineral waters and soft drinks decreased by 4.7 liters to 246.8 liters. The decrease was mainly in mineral waters, by 9.2 percent to 56.8 liters. On the contrary, lemonades recorded an increase of one percent to 93.8 liters. Coffee consumption increased by 5.4 percent to 2.2 kilograms, according to statistical data. Czechs consumed a total of 142 liters of beer per capita in 2019, one more liter per person compared to 2018. Data however shows that tap beer sold in bars or restaurants has been slowly declining, with...
Argentinian restaurant Gran Fierro initially opened its doors in 2014 in the centre of Prague in Voršilská Street. After relocating this year to Myslikova Street in Prague, the owner, Juan Cruz, is on a mission to bring sustainability to the heart of the restaurant. “We came out of the quarantine with a fresh and more conscious approach. We can proudly say that we are transforming Gran Fierro into a Circular Restaurant.” The new interior of Gran Fierro, inspired by Juan’s Argentinian roots, was designed by the award-winning studio Forma Fatal. Among many original details, there is an impressive wall with hanging coals that showcases their commitment to sustainability. “It’s a magnificent looking statement. Our kitchen is based on fire, so charcoal is at the centre of it. It’s important to reflect on the negative impact of the charcoal industry, to avoid deforestation. And as well to gain knowledge on the sustainable alternatives. Our wall has a mix of charcoal and biochar, they look the same, but they are not. Knowing the difference between them is vital for sustainability.” Gran Fierro is known for its premium steaks prepared on a charcoal grill that adds a unique and authentic flavour and moisture....
Tucked in a corner of Vinohrady in Prague 2, an Italian wine bar run by a couple team is serving up the taste of Tuscany. Anna and Glenn run this small bar in Prague 2, situated close to Riegrovy Sady and the leafy Manesova Street. You will find a modest selection of wines from many Italian regions in Assaggio (which means “to taste”), with an emphasis on wines from Tuscany, where they have often visited to discover new wineries. Small, honest family-run wine producers with quality and reasonable prices are the philosophy with which the owners of Assaggio wish to present their wines. They import directly from two Tuscan wineries and one in Friuli. Wines in the bar change often, so there isn’t a fixed wine list. Bottles are opened daily so the customer can sample different grape types and Italian regions. Anna recommends the wines by glass or bottle to suit the customers’ taste, meanwhile, Glenn makes a selection of starters typical of the Tuscan region, crostini, antipasti and cheese plates. You will find a rustic, covered garden in the back of the bar, ideal for the warmer spring, summer evenings spent with friends, or a romantic partner. Prices...
‘Meat’ the man who has been gaining rave reviews for his delicious Wild Game produce. I often hear people saying “wild game meat tastes “too gamey”. What most of those people actually mean is that the flavour is too meaty and intense. This is an absolute myth because when prepared and cooked properly, wild game can taste even better and milder than regular types of meat. It is all about the right preparation and most of all the freshness of the meat. The proof as they say is in the pudding, and thankfully for the people of Prague, English-born chef Kevin Windsor and his wife Mila together with their company Windsor Enterprise provide all the evidence to prove that point. Even better news for the Prague population is that there are more and more options to purchase and taste his produce in the city. I caught up with Kevin recently to find out more about the wild game business and the impact he is having on this industry in the Czech Republic. So, how did it all start? “To be honest, the entire thing started as an accident. My wife’s brother is a fully sanctioned hunter and one day, he...
The measures against COVID-19 have heavily affected restaurants. Their biggest help is the in-person collection. Milan Borovič opened his restaurant Jezerka in Nusle three years ago and his business was running smoothly. However, due to this year’s precautionary measures made by the government, he has had to close down and his only means of sales is a walk-up window. Lunchtime periods are starting, yet there aren’t many customers. “We sell on average 25 meals a day,” he says. The state’s contribution helped him with paying his rent amidst these difficult times. According to Václav Stárek, the president of the Czech Hotels and Restaurants Association, the majority of gastronomes find the current aid intensity insufficient. We’ll make do until the end of the year. Hard to say what’s to come after, we’ll definitely do our best,” Borovič says. “I hope that my personnel will wait out the wintertime and plans on opening the garden and grill in March and get people back to the restaurant.” They don’t know if they will survive winter The owner of the Le Camille bistro in Anděl, Kamil Grůževský, suffered the same fate. He had to let go of a fraction of his employees, his...
In “the land that vegetables forgot”, as Anthony Bourdain stated on his show “No Reservations” meat has always been a staple in Czech Republic’s kitchen, with men especially prone to reach for meat-heavy dishes in restaurants, cafeterias, etc. Purchasing rates for tofu, soy products, and meat substitutes remain low in supermarkets and restaurants within the Czech male demographics, especially those outside of Prague and over the age of 35. Now, a new ethnographic research study conducted through in-depth interviews in Dvur Kralove nad Labem, by a Durham University Masters student explains why. Male strength: Men believe vegan products, diets, and lifestyles are unhealthy, unsatisfying, restrictive, and bland. Health concerns were also a recurring topic amongst men. The dominant notion within this theme maintained that vegetarian or vegan diets and their corresponding products deplete male strength and energy, confine their choices, limit their satiety, and eliminate their favourite food flavours. “I don’t think men should cut out meat – especially men that have a physical job or go to the gym or are athletic – you need a lot of energy. I know of some acquaintances of mine that tried a vegetarian diet for a while, and all of those men...
For any who still want to celebrate Thanksgiving from home, Culinaria Catering has offered home delivery and takeaway of a traditional American Thanksgiving menu since 2008.
Bee’s Restaurant is a new eatery based off Náměstí Míru in Prague 2 that’s serving natural wine that won’t leave you with a sore head and tantalise tastebuds with Mediterranean style dishes. The striking blue and yellow walls of this modern restaurant are adorned with golden and pop art bees to honour its namesake. Stepping out the back you enter a romantic garden space, framed with trees bearing fruit; quince, apple, pear and apricot. For the moment, the tables are covered and the fairy lights stay off and the customer can only peek through the dispensing window. When Covid restrictions lift, manager Zen David Bojić tells me they have grand plans for the beautiful outdoor dining space. Prague Morning met with Zen to find out what Bee’s has to offer. Why should customers order from Bee’s? We opened this restaurant to offer something special, something different to what is usually available in Prague. Our Á la carte menu is generally a mix of Mediterranean cuisines from France, Spain, or Italy. In some dishes however we implement local elements like red cabbage or even Slovak brynza cheese. We play with contrasting flavours to make it something completely fresh. We also...
The Coronavirus lockdown is having a devastating impact on Prague’s bars and restaurants. But how far would you go to ensure your favourite local bar or restaurant survives? There are a number of ways that you can support your local. How many of the following would you consider? Order takeaway food and collect direct from the restaurant. All the money goes to the restaurant, but this really only works if you live nearby. Order food for delivery using a service such as Wolt, Bolt, or Dáme jídlo. The restaurant has to pay a hefty percentage to the delivery service, but at least make some money. Purchase a discounted voucher for future use, for example, pay 1500 Kč for a 2000 Kč voucher. The place gets an injection of cash but eventually has to allow redemption of a voucher purchased for less than face value. You get a discount but take the risk that the place doesn’t close down before you can redeem the voucher. Purchase a voucher at face value. The place gets an injection of cash and doesn’t lose anything. You take the risk that the place doesn’t close down before you can redeem the voucher. Donate to using...
