Our answer to both questions is a resounding “No”. The Czech gastronomic scene is going through a challenging period. The only way restaurants can stay up and running now is through a serving window or food delivery. However, according to some restaurants, delivery services do not offer the fairest conditions. Storyous – which focuses of developing technologies for the restaurant industry – wants to change this, by cooperating with renowned chef, TV personality and entrepreneur, Zdeněk Pohlreich, and taxi ordering app Liftago. Together, they launched OneMenu.cz, which, according to its founders, is “based on fairness towards customers, carriers, and restaurants”. According to statistics from Storyous, only about half of Czech restaurants are currently open, and sales in gastronomy fell by 49 per cent year-on-year in October. “OneMenu.cz has been operating since spring as an online service to order from the dispensing window. Thanks to growing demand from many restaurants, we are now also expanding the service with delivery options, and I am very pleased that Zdeněk Pohlreich and Liftago decided to further develop the project with us,” says Igor Třeslín, Head of Storyous. Food retail sales have climbed as shoppers eat and drink more at home rather than going out as the effects of the Covid pandemic continue to play out. Czech online grocery stores are now recording a similar influx of customers as in March and April, but they are managing the situation much better. “Honestly, we expected more pressure. I would not compare it to the excessive reaction of customers during the first wave,” said Aleš Malucha, Chief Operating Officer of Rohlík.cz. Košík.cz is now also reporting a similar demand as in March. “It turns out that the shopping ‘crisis’ in spring was caused by the unpreparedness of the entire retail sector,” said spokesman František Brož. In October, online grocery stores had to impose a few restrictions. Rohlík.cz limited the number of items per single order and they only accept payments in advance by card. The possibility of payments in cash is not possible even with Košík.cz. Moreover, the company applies a limit of 70 kilograms per order. A secondary school has started teaching an apprenticeship in fast-food gastronomy, which ends with a guaranteed job at McDonald’s. The three-year course is being offered by the Technical and Gastronomic Secondary School, based in the town of Blansko (South Moravian Region), which counts the fast-food giant as its multinational partner. Starting next September, students will be given practical experience in McDonald’s, including Barista and service training, with a position at the chain promised at the end. They will also learn how to run a restaurant and manage a team of people. On their Facebook page, the school explained that they were ‘inspired by a successful German model’. The U.S.-based fast-food company joined the European Alliance for Apprenticeships in August 2018 and aims to provide 43,000 apprenticeships by 2025 in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the UK. This is the first of its kind in the Czech Republic. The school continued: “The result is the focus of the specialist fast-food gastronomy. And it’s definitely not just a burger assembly. The term “natural wine” is to be understood as a term that refers to wines made traditionally, with a minimum of technological intervention and without additives. This does not mean that wines made with modern technologies are artificial or unnatural. Natural in this case means natural, spontaneous, and in contrast to a more modern approach, which is based on the management and direction of wine processes. Producers of natural wines strive for the most natural products possible with minimal interventions in the entire production process. Fancy biting into an edible Coronavirus molecule? It may not be your usual craving, but Černá Madona restaurant has begun selling a dessert that resembles a magnified image of the virus. It’s a massive success. Confectioner Olga Budnik came up with the novel ideal during quarantine in the spring of this year. “I found a photo with a magnification of coronavirus on the Internet and I thought in detail about what the dessert should consist of so that it resembles a virus. I was thinking about what to make spikes that stick out of the virus and how to get suitable colours,” she said. The final result is striking. The dessert slightly smaller than a tennis ball and covered with a chocolate crust dusted with cocoa butter spray. Dried raspberries are stuck to circles of white chocolate, made to resemble the spines which stick out of the molecule. Inside of the spiky ball, you will find nothing but luxurious layers of pistachio cream, raspberry puree, and more raspberries. The Czech government will close indoor sports facilities and culture venues for two weeks from Monday to slow down the spread of new coronavirus infections. On Thursday, the Minister of Health Roman Prymula (ANO) announced that restaurants and other catering facilities will have to close as early as 8 pm.
