This year, the restaurant in the Czech Center building, in New York, has received the Bib Gourmand Award from the Michelin Gastronomic Guide. The Bohemian Spirit restaurant, which offers Czech specialties such as svíčková, duck with cabbage and bramboračka (potato soup) in the American city, is among more than a hundred businesses where Michelin inspectors say people eat well without spending excessive sums. The list of restaurants that this year’s Michelin Guide in New York attributed to the Bib Gourmand symbol—which stands for good quality at an affordable price—was published by the publishers before declassifying the overall rating. The guide will be released next week and will focus on which businesses will receive Michelin stars. Currently, there are 55 restaurants with one Michelin star in New York, 14 restaurants with two stars and five restaurants with the highest possible three-star rating. Other national cuisines are appreciated quite often by the Michelin-starred restaurants in New York, such as Japanese, Mexican, French, Italian or Korean restaurants. However, local specialties are often offered at the menu for more than $ 100 (2000 CZK). The Bohemian Spirit restaurant keeps low on New York rates: appetizers, soups, and desserts cost $9 (210 Kč), veal schnitzel...

Prague is a very well-known tourist place that provides travellers tourists with a variety of choices when it comes to restaurants and eateries. From different ethnic cuisines to even American fast foods—KFC and McDonald’s are popular here—people from all over who come to visit Prague can still feel close to home when it comes to eating at a restaurant. Adding itself to this list of ethnic cultural cuisine is the Australian family-pub that has been making a name for itself for three months now: The Down Under. Bringing some of Australia to the city life, Ashley McGlynn—the Down Under founder—fell in love with hospitality at the age of 14, when he started working for his godfather at a restaurant back in Sydney. Although he held down odd jobs in his early years in Prague (i.e. English teaching, journalist, tour-guiding), Ashley never lost touch with his first love. Ashley describes Australia as being a “mixed-bred” nation. “The bulk of the country is built on people who immigrated, who were running from something, escaping from or for something, or looking for something new,” he said. “You have Greek-Australians, Italian-Australians, Asian-Australians…[so many different mixed ethnicities]. That’s what Australia is.” This description of Australia, along...
Although restaurants pay a lot of money to take over public spaces, for many, the expansion of the business area with front gardens is an essential part of their business. What bothers them the most is that they are not sure if they will get the necessary permission, even if they fit all the requirements. The 1st Deputy Mayor of Prague 1, Petr Hejma, will promote the change. According to the Prague 1 Chamber of Commerce, the current position of self-government and state administration is not enough transparent and equal to all entrepreneurs. “There will be a sanction if someone does not follow the rules. However, if they adhere to them, they deserve respect and a stable business environment without surprises and difficult or unexplained decisions”, said the chairman of the Chamber, Vladimír Krištof. The Deputy Mayor of Prague 1, Petr Hejma, also acknowledged this. “The front gardens must satisfy the aesthetic requirements of the historical centre; they must not disturb and restrict their surroundings or prevent passage and are obliged to follow the opening hours strictly. If they adhere to this along with other regulations, I do not see a significant reason why entrepreneurs who operate their front yards...

Hundreds of restaurants from the Czech Republic have started to offer unsold food in mobile apps, where everyone can order them with a discount. According to the Save Food Organization, about 27,000 tons are thrown away every year, even though it is edible. “If I want to buy some food, it’s simple. I will click for an offer, such as a Dutch schnitzel with boiled potatoes in butter”, shows the founder of the application Nesnězeno, Jakub Henni, about how to order the remaining food from a restaurant in Prague via mobile phone. “I already have a card, so I just click ‘confirm and pay’, and then I have the food purchased” explains. You must pick the food directly at the restaurant. Nesnězeno is an app that has been running for less than a year, but more and more businesses are offering unsold food, 255 in total. The first ones were in Brno, and then more restaurants were gradually added in Olomouc, Ostrava, or Prague among others. For example, Kolkovna Olympia adds offers about twice a week. “We even have a regular customer there. One lady regularly takes two soups and two main meals”, says the manager Zuzana Dostálová. Restaurants’ interest in...

Nowadays, it became popular to have a healthy lifestyle. And certainly, those who are aware of good nutrition, also know that seafood is an essential part of it. Prague Mussel Week which is held from 23-29 September is an exciting opportunity to get to know more about seafood by tasting it in one of the mussel restaurants. Mussels are not that common sea product to eat and that is a pity. Seafood is associated to be expensive and exotic for Czechs, salmon price usually is “scaring away” people for buying it. That’s why it is frequently easier to buy pork or chicken instead of that and nothing changes. “Eating pork every day is not very healthy,” says Pierre-Manuel Boels, HOPI CEE Fish Hub. Mussels are not expensive (around 64 CZK per 1 kg) and are easy and fast to cook (4 to 6 minutes), it contains more of proteins, minerals and vitamins, and less of fat. “But be aware that mussels should be closed, if they are open, they are dead” claims Boels. What might also be attractive is that Prague became a hub of seafood in Central and Eastern Europe. “We have the freshest fish on average in Europe...
I like this place for a kind of sentimental reason. My grandpa used to run a cinema here, and my mom was selling tickets in the ticket booth… but today there is a very hip “bistro” run by a bunch of very enthusiastic people who will provide you with a narrow but great selection of food and drinks. You can stop here for breakfast, lunch or dinner or for a coffee or a drink anytime. But personally, I recommend their take on “palačinky” (crepes) with a cappuccino. Anyway, why would you come here just for a coffee without any other reason to visit this place? I’ll tell you. Ořechovka was (and still is) one of the most prestigious addresses in Prague. It is where many foreign embassies are located. It was the first villa quarter built during the “first republic” (1919-1939) and the style was inspired by English and Dutch architecture. It is believed that by wandering around this area you will find streets that look more English than streets in England itself. Come by tram number 1 or 2 to station Sibeliova and start exploring.
