76 Years Ago, the Massacre of Lidice

On June 10, 1942, the German government announced that it had destroyed the small village of Lidice, Czechoslovakia, killing every adult male and some fifty-two women. All surviving women and children were then deported to concentration camps, or if found suitable to be “Germanized”, sent to the greater Reich. The Nazi’s then proudly proclaimed that the village of Lidice, it’s residents, and its very name, were now forever blotted from memory. 184 men were executed. The village was then destroyed, literally wiped off the map. They even killed the village priest and every animal, pet or beast of burden. Today, events will take place throughout the morning and early afternoon, and the memorial and galleries will be open free of charge for the entire day. After the tragedy in 1942, other towns across the world adopted the name Lidice so it would not be forgotten. There is a Lidice in Panama and in Brazil. San Jerónimo Lídice is a part of Mexico City. There is a Lidice district in Crest Hill, Illinois. Stoke-on-Trent in Britain has long had a sister city relationship with Lidice. United Islands of Prague Returning to Karlín

The 15th edition of the international music festival United Islands of Prague will take place June 22–23 in Prague’s Karlín district. There will be some 15 musical stages featuring over 100 performers. Entry to the festival is free. The United Islands festival moved to Karlín last year after having previously been at various locations along the waterfront and on islands in the Vltava. This edition will take place along Krizikova Street from Karlínské náměstí to Kaizlovy sady and Invalidovna, The center of Karlín will become a large pedestrian zone with stalls and musical stages. June 9-10: Weekend of Open Gardens

The Weekend of Open Gardens is an event where people get the chance to see gardens not normally open to visitors and also to find out more about their favorite parks.  On this occasion, the public can learn a thing or two about the methods of horticultural experts and gain a new perspective on the function and significance of plants in our lives. During this weekend various parks and gardens organize an extensive programme including guided tours, activities for children, concerts, etc. “People have the opportunity to explore the normally inaccessible gardens, but also to discover their favorite parks in a new way,” according to Prague’s tourist portal. The gardens consist of both of privately and publicly owned properties, as well church gardens, and public spaces. The program also takes place in the gardens of Prague Castle. The Palace gardens under Prague Castle are situated on the southern slope of Hradcany hill and are a connection between Prague Castle and Lesser Town. The complex includes five gardens – Ledeburská zahrada, Malá Pálffyovská zahrada and Velká Pálffyovská zahrada, Kolowratská zahrada and MaláFürstenberská zahrada. July 27-29: AsianFest in Prague

AsianFest will bring the spirit of Asia to Prague. You can taste authentic cuisine from China, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Korea, Japan, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, and enjoy performances by Asian artists. The main aim of the event is to evoke atmosphere (and possible some experiences) from Asian countries. Due to its size, the festival program will be divided into three days. The third festival in the Czech Republic dedicated to pizza will take place on 16-17 June in Letná – Prague 7. This unique event brought together great pizza makers and local businesses for an amazing day of Italian food. Not only pizza then, but also delicatessens, ice-cream, wine and several workshops. David Černý's Babies to be Displayed in California

“The 10 Babies,” created by artist David Černý are in Palm Springs for a temporary exhibit.  They will be on loan to the Palm Springs developer for 20 months and will be unveiled to the public on June 5, the same day as the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce luncheon, during which Michael Braun, president of Grit Deveessman of the year. Braun paid for the “Babies” to be shipped from Europe and then trucked in from the Los Angeles port. He added some people hate the “Babies” and some like them, but he hopes that will create a conversation. “He took the face away and put this stamp of a barcode… instead of what defines their individuality and their humanity. Especially with the way the world has become more digitized… we as a person really no longer count, only as a number, a unit, whether it’s a working unit, or a consumption unit. By putting that on a baby it really touches people,” said Christian Hohmann, owner of Hohmann Fine Art Gallery in Palm Desert who helped secure the artwork. Tip for the Weekend: Visit The Hidden Courtyards of Prague

One of the hidden gems of Prague are its courtyards, which one does not almost notice while admiring the beautiful historical facades. This event offers you a unique option to visit places which are usually not publicly accessible. The event takes place this weekend (May 26 and 27) and will unlock gates to about 13 courtyards at Lesser Town and you can enjoy here installations by fine artists, public readings and concerts. The organizers recommend participants to go first to Malostranské náměstí (opposite the tram stop) and buy a brochure. It includes a map of the sites and a historical summary of the selected yards, as well as a complete list of all planned events. The price of the brochure is 50 CZK. The initiative belongs to Prague café owner and urban impresario Ondřej Kobza, who last year rented a 1,000-square meter space on top Lucerna Palace with the goal have a community garden. Kasárna Karlín to Start Summer Movie Season

Located in the heart of Karlin, it’s hard to believe Kasárna Karlín hasn’t been around forever. This multi-purpose cultural center opened in June 2017 in the courtyard of an abandoned army barracks. It boasts an outdoor cinema, bar, cafe, gallery, sculpture garden, and most recently, the 4+4 festival’s artistic squatting art exhibit.  Kasárna Karlín is now preparing a new season of events for the warm-weather months of 2018 and will kick things off this week with its first open-air cinema screening.  On Saturday, it will screen the seminal San Francisco cop classic Dirty Harry starring Clint Eastwood. The movie will be shown in English with Czech subtitles. The screening will commence at 22:00 and the entrance is 80 CZK.  Further screenings and events have yet to be announced but you can keep yourself updated following the Kasárna Karlín Facebook page Trying to create a new public space, Kasárna Karlín is operated by a group of artists. Open House Praha Exposes Prague's Architectural Gems

The Open House Praha festival this year will see 65 buildings open to the public on May 19 and 20. The buildings include new examples of modern office architecture, 20th-century landmarks and historical palaces. Twenty-four buildings are new to the program this year.  Some will only have guided tours while others will allow for free exploring. Some will also only be open for limited hours or only one of the two days, so it best to check online in advance. Národní Divadlo Celebrating 150th Anniversary

The National Theatre in Prague celebrated the 150th anniversary of the laying of its foundation stone with a performance of folklore groups and the teaching of the old Bohemian polka dance by ballet soloists, who re-enacted the historical events on Saturday. The laying of the foundation stone for the building of the NG in 1868 became one of the biggest events of the Czech national revival in the 19th century. At that time, it lasted three days and was visited by the estimated 150,000 people. The idea of building a stately edifice to serve as a theatre was first mooted in the autumn of 1844 at meetings of patriots in Prague. It began to materialize through a request for “the privilege of constructing, furnishing, maintaining and managing” an independent Czech theatre, which was submitted to the Provincial Committee of the Czech Assembly by František Palacký on 29 January 1845.  The most important moment came on May 16, when the granite block from Lounovice, central Bohemia, was tipped by a gilded hammer by “the father of the nation” Frantisek Palacky, prominent Czech politician Ladislav Rieger, actor Josef Jiri Kolar and composer Bedrich Smetana, whose opera Dalibor was premiered on the day. May 18: International Museum Day

The objective of International Museum Day is to raise awareness of the fact that, “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.” The theme chosen for 2018 is “Hyperconnected museums: New approaches, new publics“. The aim ist to point on the way how museum use new technologies and options how they can use them in order to attract new visitors.  There will be free admission and special programs at the Sternberg Palace, Schwarzenberg Palace, the Monastery of St. Agnes Czech, the Trade Fair Palace, Kinský Palace and Wallenstein Riding School. Other museums with special programs include Náprstkovo Museum, Czech Museum of Music, Lapidary, the Museum of Antonin Dvorak, Bedrich Smetana Museum, National Monument on Vítkov and the Ethnographic Museum – Musaion.
