Czech vets are due to cull 80,000 hens at a farm where over 100,000 animals have died of bird flu since late last week, the state veterinary office said Tuesday. The farm in Libotenice, about 45 kilometres (28 miles) north of Prague, had a total of 188,000 hens before Christmas. “The culling of hens from halls affected by bird flu is underway,” said State Veterinary Administration spokesman Petr Majer. “The numbers show that this strain, the highly pathogenic H5N1, is very aggressive and kills hens in particular fast and on a mass scale,” he added. He said vets would also destroy over a million eggs from the farm. The Czech Republic has registered 48 outbreaks of bird flu this year, the highest number in a calendar year in history. The disease is currently plaguing Europe, with France reporting an outbreak in its foie gras producing Landes region last week. A bird flu outbreak in northern Israel has killed at least 5,200 migratory cranes and forced farmers to slaughter hundreds of thousands of chickens as authorities try to contain what they say is the deadliest wildlife disaster in the nation’s history. So far no human transmission has been reported, according to the prime minister’s office.
Laboratories in the Czech Republic registered 6,850 new cases of Covid 19 on Monday, the lowest number on weekdays since October 29. However, the number of tests conducted was also significantly lower, according to data released by the Ministry of Health. About 47,000 PCR tests and over 19,000 antigenic tests were performed, almost two-fifths less than a week ago. Compared to the previous week, the number of hospitalizations also fell by a third to 3,505, with 687 in a critical condition. The incidence number is now at 363 per 100,000 inhabitants. The spread of covid-19 has been slowing for about a month. At the end of November, the daily number of new infections reached almost 28,000, the highest increase in the entire epidemic. The number of new cases in the last seven days per 100,000 inhabitants, ie the so-called incidence number, has also been falling for about three weeks. As of Tuesday, it decreased from Monday’s 379 to 363. The coronavirus death toll in the Czech Republic has reached 35,911. Vaccination began last December 27 and approximately 15.3 million doses of vaccine have been administered since then. Over 6.6 million people were fully vaccinated.
A revised version of the emergency measures will apply from December 29th to January 2nd. As of December 29, a maximum of 50 people will be allowed at indoor events, parties and New Year’s celebrations with only four people allowed at one table. Cultural events will still be limited to 1,000 people, but events, where people mingle, must not exceed 100 participants. In the first fortnight of the New Year, schoolchildren will have to undergo tests twice a week. Other measures concern cable cars, which will no longer require proof of full vaccination, recent illness, or PCR test, where the cable car is operated under a public service contract. For school ski courses shorter than eight days, a PCR test completed no more than 72 hours before the start of the course will be sufficient for pupils under the age of 18, and for longer courses pupils will have to be retested after five to seven days. “In order to prevent the uncontrolled spread of the new omicron variant, it will now be mandatory to perform investigative PCR tests on all positive samples if the test subjects showed clinical signs of Covid-19,” said Health Minister Vlastimil Válek (TOP 09). Former Czech prime minister Andrej Babis has bought a camper van in which he wants to start travelling across the country to meet people as of February, he said in a video posted on his Twitter account today. “I’ve always dreamed of riding a camper van and of course sleeping in it. Why? Because it reminds me of when in 2013 I traveled with my team to meet citizens during the election campaign,” said Babiš. ANO, whose acronym means both “yes” and “Action of Dissatisfied Citizens”, a populist party, easily won the general election that took place in the Czech Republic on 20th and 21st October 2017, with 29.64% of the vote and 78 seats (+ 31 in comparison with the previous general election on 25th and 26th October 2013). The Czech Republic will welcome in 2022 after the warmest New Year’s Eve on record, forecasters say. Temperatures are set to be “exceptionally mild” this week before hitting a balmy 15 degrees Celsius on Thursday and Friday – warmer than April, when the mercury hovers at an average of 14 degrees Celsius. On New Year’s weekend, the highs can reach up to 15 degrees Celsius. The beginning of the new year will also be warm and relatively dry, according to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI). “In the last two days of the year, the afternoon temperatures will reach record values from 10 to 15 degrees Celsius,” says CHMI. The first days of the new year are forecast to be warm, relatively dry, and sometimes sunny. “The weather has been pretty topsy-turvy. We’ve had a cold Christmas – and now we’re going to see it get warmer”. The New Year’s Eve weekend will contrast sharply with the Christmas weekend when temperatures dropped well below freezing. Areas in Northern Bohemia saw a steep drop in temperatures last night, reaching -10 degrees Celsius in most areas. A low of -26.8 degrees was registered in the Jizera Mountains. It was the lowest temperature this winter. The...

At its first cabinet meeting, the new government headed by Petr Fiala decided not to ask the lower house to extend the Covid-related state of emergency in the country introduced on November 25 for a period of 30 days. Therefore, today at 23:59, the quarantine measures introduced will automatically expire. From tomorrow, December 26, restaurants, bars, clubs, and casinos will be able to remain open after 22:00, including on New Year’s Eve. The ban on drinking alcohol on the streets and in other public places will also expire. However, from December 29 to January 2, additional restrictions will apply. The measure is aimed at limiting the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant during New Year’s celebrations. – in restaurants, a maximum of four people can sit at one table (instead of the current six people). Police officers in Pardubice received a phone call from a local fast food on Thursday morning. Employees said they found a live carp in the toilet bowl. The carp were brought to the restaurant by a 28-year-old customer. The man bought the animal for the traditional Christmas dinner, but for some reason decided to place the carp in the toilet while he was waiting for his breakfast. “He probably didn’t come up with any better idea,” said police spokesman Jiří Sejkora. Before the arrival of the police, two employees took out the carp, placed it in a bucket of clean water, and then returned it to the owner. Carp and Christmas Carp for Christmas is not as strange as it seems. In Christianity fish have religious symbolism. Christ fed 5,000 with two fish and five loaves. He called his disciples ‘fishers of men.’ Fish should be eaten on fasting days. Christmas Eve is a fasting evening so carp is on the menu. One carp is enough for the whole family as there is sufficient meat between the bones to feed all. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, you’ll find massive tanks full of carp outside every single supermarket, ready...
On 20 December, the European Commission opened an in-depth investigation into the Czech national regulatory authority’s (CTU) draft market analysis with regard to the regulation of the wholesale market for access to mobile services in the Czech Republic. Access and call origination are services which mobile network operators (“MNOs”) supply to themselves and to other mobile network operators or mobile virtual network operators (operators who do not own a network, “MVNOs”) hosted on their networks. Such services can be provided also to other MNOs who have their own network and access rights to spectrum, but their network is still underdeveloped (e.g. due to late market entry, or due to a commercial decision to rely on national roaming in certain areas, rather than deploy its own network). CTU proposes to designate three MNOs (i.e. O2, T-Mobile and Vodafone) as having joint Significant Market Power (“SMP”) in this wholesale mobile market and consequently to impose regulatory obligations on these three operators, that are the main operators in the Czech market. In its serious doubts letter, the Commission does not question as such that the Czech mobile market may not display the characteristics of a fully competitive market. However, the Commission questions the...
Google published its annual “Year in Search”, revealing the top global Google searches by country. To highlight the most significant events and say goodbye to 2020, we collected the top searches in the Czech Republic. Sčítání lidu – the census that took place this year Euro 2021 Bitcoin Registrace očkování (vaccination registration, with several peaks in late February, May and late November) Volby (elections). The most searched Czech person was Milos Zeman, with a sudden peak in mid-October, when the Czech head of state’s hospitalization threw the country into a post-election limbo. Czechs also expressed the most interest in Dominik Feri, the youngest and first black MP in Czech political history who was forced to resign in May following a sexual abuse and harassment scandal. The “How to…” searches are also always full of valuable and surprising lessons to understand what was on the mind of a population. This year, Czechs were particularly keen on knowing more about: Jak dlouho platí antigenní test? (How long is an antigen test valid?) Jak vzniká tornádo? (How is a tornado formed?) – yes, the Czech Republic now has tornadoes, courtesy of 2021. Jak volit? (How to vote?) Jak dlouho trvá karanténa? (How long does the quarantine last?).
