Prague’s specialty coffee scene has grown tremendously in the past few years. It is on this premise that we have decided to launch a reviews’ series “Your Prague Mug” in cooperation with a certified coffee lover, advisor and expert living in the city, Olga. To begin the series, Olga went to Mari Vanna coffee house, to find out what they have to offer. I initially saw this place on Instagram. Pictures from this coffee shop and its unusual interior appeared on my friends’ social networks towards the end of last year. Beautiful furniture of the 60s-70s, which evokes memories of my childhood, colorful stylish dishes, eye-catching elements, and soft enveloping light – all of this made me need to go and check it out. Some 6,000 pubs and restaurants across the Czech Republic take part in the eight annual Czech Beer Days (Dny českého piva) from September 23 to September 30. St. Wenceslas Day, the 28th of September, is a national holiday, celebrating Václav I’s legacy of helping unify Bohemia. But he is also considered the patron saint of beer. Dozens of breweries and microbreweries are participating nationwide in the festival. The event celebrates not only beer but pub culture as a whole. Japan’s Netflix library contains more top-quality TV and film content than anywhere else in the world, according to a new study by Uswitch. The research calculated which countries have access to the best-reviewed and most awarded TV and film content by totalling the IMBD scores for every TV series and film in each country’s library. This was combined with the total number of award wins and award nominations and Uswitch then converted the overall total into a Netflix catalogue score out of a possible 100. Where To See the Best TV and Film on Netflix With an IMDB total of 27,284, more than 19,000 award wins and over 40,000 award nominations across its entire Netflix catalogue – Japan is awarded the maximum 100 Netflix catalogue points for its total score of 86,961, highest of all countries. The Czech Republic is second on the list with a Netflix catalogue score of 97.61. In third place is South Korea with a score of 94.02, the UK has a score of 93.78 which lands fourth place, and in fifth, it’s Switzerland with a score of 94.74. Most shoppers in the Czech Republic prefer to buy Czech food in supermarkets, a new survey by Nielsen Admosphere has revealed. The study also found that 97% of respondents visit supermarkets for food at least sometimes, while 64% shop in small and brick-and-mortar stores, 31% at farmers’ markets, 26% at market stalls, 21% in specialized shops such as organic shops and 17% online. Country Of Origin Around 85% of the respondents highlighted the country of origin of products as an essential factor while choosing products. The research also revealed that 41% of respondents expressed interest in the country of origin for almost all products. In comparison, 44% cared about it only for selected products, and 15% did not care about it. The study also found that 70% of shoppers were willing to pay extra if they had the option to buy a product from their preferred country of origin. Products from the Czech Republic ranked first among Czech consumers in terms of product origin, followed by Germany and Slovakia. Poland emerged as the least popular producer country for Czechs, with only 4% of respondents saying they preferred Polish products. Prague Castle is hosting a two-day festival of mini-breweries this weekend. The festival, which starts on Friday afternoon, will offer the production of 66 Czech and Moravian breweries and four foreign brewers. Altogether, visitors can taste 140 different sorts of beer. Now in its 10th year, the Microbrewery Festival has become one of Prague Castle’s most popular events, filling the Castle’s Royal Garden with some of the Czech Republic’s most popular microbreweries. The festival is organized by the Czech-Moravian Union of Minibreweries. Last year, visitors consumed around 7,000 liters of beer. This year, the festival will take place on Friday, September 24 from 14:00 – 20:00 and on Saturday, September 25 from 12:00 – 20:00. The number of visitors is limited by the event’s venue. Every day, 1.200 visitors can attend the event; 600 tickets will be sold at the venue. Participating breweries include favorites like Clock, Purkmistr, U Medvídků, Hoppy Dog, Joe’s Garage, Faltus, Permon, Kocour, and countless others. Over the summer, the Czech government announced that it was lifting the prohibition on dancing in clubs. It was reported that teens and adults (even some seniors) were dancing in the streets in jubilation around the country at the stroke of midnight, when the ban was lifted. And so since the time is still ripe for dancing, the annual Lunchmeat Festival, has again invited first-rate international electronic music artists and DJs paired with new media artists for making unique synesthetic (physical and intensely visual) experiences. The tenth Prague Coffee Festival will be held between 18th and 22nd October. Like in recent years, you can enjoy a rich festival program full of excellent coffee from all over the world, presentations of selected roasteries and cafés, cuppings, and interesting lectures. Prague Coffee Festival came into existence with the idea of promoting coffee culture and getting-together everyone who is keen on coffee: professional baristas, coffee shop owners, coffee “beginners” and also people who are knowledgeable but want to learn more and more about it.
