Forget the capital city of Prague. Forget Brno. The best region to live in the Czech Republic lies somewhere in between. An annual survey by the website Místo pro život (Place for Life) has placed the Zlín region top as the best region to live. The study compares 54 criteria in eight categories to tabulate the result. The study takes into account for example the quality of education, healthcare, infrastructure and social services, and polling a representative panel of over 1.200 respondents all over the country. Zlín scores high in many of the areas one would expect. There is a very low crime and unemployment rate, excellent universities, a large number of dentists and doctors per citizen, a sufficient number of high-quality social institutions for the elderly, and excellent ecology. Vysocina took second place in the ranking. It boasts affordable housing (the lowest rents in the country, the best housing-to-wage ratio, a large number of social housing), good public transportation, low unemployment and high life expectancy. Wine lovers rejoice! The LÁHVE store in Prague is expanding the geography of its assortment: Spain now joins France, Italy, Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic. The added location means customers have access to 36 brands of Spanish wines (11 white and 25 red). LÁHVE remained faithful to its concept – to offer customers high-quality wines from the middle price segment. An illustrative example: to select the 36 brands, the store formed a tasting committee which evaluated 120 samples from Spanish winemakers. Only 30% of the submissions were lucky enough to hit the shelves. The number of cases in the country is increasing, but Prague is not discouraged. The onset of Christmas distracts from worries: open fairs, with people in line for freshly cut Christmas trees or waiting around to buy tons of wrapping paper. Black Friday, the most awaited discount holiday of the year, is set to bring enormous customer interest this year. Experts predict this year could be a record in online sales and claim it will even significantly exceed last year’s results when in-store shops were closed due to the pandemic. Shoptet, which manages over 28,000 e-shops, claims there is billions to be made online this year. “During the Black Friday weekend, we expect e-shop sales to be around four billion crowns,” says Samuel Huba, CEO of the company. “The greatest interest should be in toys, electronics, and games on computers and consoles.” Black Friday, which will begin on November 26 and extend across the weekend, is a hot topic in the Czech Republic, especially for large e-shops. Several retailers have even launched discount promotions before November 26 this year, which aroused unprecedented interest among customers. “This year is extreme in that people shop in bulk two weeks before the classic Black Friday,” explained Jindřich Kadeřávek, head of Element Logic Czech Republic, which supplies automated warehousing solutions to the Czech market. “In addition to fears of a shortage of goods, they are also afraid of a possible further lockdown.”

The covid pandemic canceled last year’s Christmas markets, but the first festivities of this year’s season will return Saturday, Nov. 20. Náměstí Míru will be filled with traditional assortment and delicacies. The festive atmosphere will be extended to Tyl Square the following Friday. Both markets will be open until Christmas Day, per a Prague 2 press release. The advent in Prague 2 mainly includes cultural, social and family events, all of which are usually organized by the town hall during this period. Last week, the Czech Union of Friends of Beer (Sdružení přátel piva) announced its awards for the best beers, best breweries and the best brewmaster in the country. Rodinný pivovar Bernard was named the best brewing company of 2021, winning the Pivovar roku prize for the consistently high quality of its products, investment and continuous improvement in production.
