Papundekl Architects has turned a former car workshop in Prague into a bar and events space with a brutalist slant. Situated just south of Prague‘s scenic downtown district, Vršovice has transformed from blue-collar neighbourhood into a notable hipster area in recent years, and it’s a trend that has yet to see the end. Adding to the many bars and clubs that line the streets here is the newly opened K7.club with its street side bar. Designated as a community hub, and an aptly cool one at that, the venue occupies 133 sqm. ground floor space of an early 20th-century residential building and features an interior design by local architecture practice Papundekl. The venue, formerly a car repair shop, sees three distinct areas—an elongated bar, an elevated lounge and event space, and a private club space at the back. At the core, an open space for screening, restrooms, and the back end of the aforementioned bar can be found, all in an understated industrial style. Also, the façade has been slightly modified and now sees a doorway which has been slightly extended to match the window’s upper level and provide a greatly improved balance visually. As K7.club serves as a multifunctional space where various cultural events are...

Vinohrady has been named the #32 coolest neighborhood in the world in Time Out’s latest rankings. The travel magazine and online publication creates its annual world rankings by polling 27,000 city dwellers worldwide on their favorite neighborhoods and having Time Out global editors and writers rank locations according to their community spirit, quality of food, drink and nightlife, culture and sustainability efforts. Caroline McGinn, Global Editor-in-Chief of Time Out, said: “Time Out’s annual list of the World’s Coolest Neighbourhoods is a love letter to the city at its most joyful and surprising. “It celebrates the hyperlocal places where the cities of the future are being made up, on the spot.” David Creighton, Contributing journalist for Time Out said: “Vinohrady is a gridiron of grand nineteenth-century tenements, interspersed with lush green spaces, is just minutes from Wenceslas Square but feels a world away.” “The area has taken on a cosmopolitan vibe of late, with international yopros, Erasmus students, and digital nomads all settling in. Several excellent independent shops and cafés cram the buzzing community hub of Jiřího z Poděbrad (JZP) square, which also hosts a popular farmers’ market that draws foodies from across the Czech capital (and is overlooked by the...

Prague’s specialty coffee scene has grown tremendously in the past few years. It is on this premise that we have decided to launch a reviews’ series “Your Prague Mug” in cooperation with a certified coffee lover, advisor and expert living in the city, Olga. To begin the series, Olga went to Mari Vanna coffee house, to find out what they have to offer. I initially saw this place on Instagram. Pictures from this coffee shop and its unusual interior appeared on my friends’ social networks towards the end of last year. Beautiful furniture of the 60s-70s, which evokes memories of my childhood, colorful stylish dishes, eye-catching elements, and soft enveloping light – all of this made me need to go and check it out. This coffee shop is located in Prague 7, which is famous for its designer shops, hipster restaurants, numerous galleries, and city festivals. It is also dubbed the ART District. Mari Vanna coffee house itself fits perfectly into the urban landscape: a nice “zahradka” or a garden, beautiful lights, and a huge rowan tree right at the entrance. One Saturday morning I went to Mari Vanna. I saw a spacious cafe with about 17 seats, an interesting...
Some 6,000 pubs and restaurants across the Czech Republic take part in the eight annual Czech Beer Days (Dny českého piva) from September 23 to September 30. St. Wenceslas Day, the 28th of September, is a national holiday, celebrating Václav I’s legacy of helping unify Bohemia. But he is also considered the patron saint of beer. Dozens of breweries and microbreweries are participating nationwide in the festival. The event celebrates not only beer but pub culture as a whole. And so participating pubs around the country are offering up not only special beers but also unique menus featuring dishes such as roast boar served with a rosehip sauce. Meanwhile, breweries are opening up their doors to visitors who will be able to see just how the beloved amber drink is made “We believe that Czech Beer Days will help encourage people to go out more often for their favorite beer. Czechs love Czech beer and the Czech beer tradition. We know that favorite pubs, especially for smaller towns and villages, are the center of social and cultural life,” František Šámal, chairman of the ČSPS, said in a press release. The Union of Breweries and Malt Houses established the Days of...
