Czech Farmers Preparing Four-Day Protest in Prague With 1,000 Tractors

Hundreds of dissatisfied Czech farmers are preparing to join in the ongoing farmers’ protests around Europe against EU policy and the Green Deal. Thousand of tractors are expected to take part in the protest ride on Monday, February 19. The protest is to be centred around Prague’s Malostranske square and may last for several days. Some agricultural organizations and the Czech Chamber of Agriculture have distanced themselves from the protest saying they want to negotiate with the government first. The organizers will ask for the resignation of the current government and withdraw from the so-called Green Deal, a pan-European agreement targeting climate neutrality by 2050, which organizers argue would significantly impact agricultural production. Czechia Imported Over 60% of the Gas from Russia in January

The economist Jiří Pour from UniCredit Bank, has highlighted a concerning trend in the Czech Republic’s gas imports, with Russian gas now representing the majority of deliveries, Novinky.cz writes. Despite efforts to reduce reliance on Russian imports throughout last year, the statistics have shifted dramatically since November. Data from NET4GAS indicates a sharp increase in Russian gas imports, particularly through the Lanžhot station from Slovakia, the only entry point for Russian gas into the Czech Republic. This surge is confirmed by the Czech Statistical Office’s foreign trade statistics for December, revealing a substantial rise in the share of Russian gas in total imports, reaching 58 percent. Supplies of Russian gas grew to 5.19 billion crowns in December – more than supplies from Norway – from 1.9 billion crowns in November, 700 million in October and much smaller amounts in previous months, CSU data showed. Prague is Testing a New Style of Metro Network Map

The Prague transport company ROPID is testing its new metro scheme, with designers now including passenger feedback in the process.  The new draft display, which is presented on a black background, only shows the subway line on which the passenger is currently traveling. “Based on your feedback, we have prepared an alternative version for you before the upcoming public survey. The scheme of the overall routing of the metro lines with the center detail has also been modified to improve readability,” PID explained on its Facebook account. Passengers can see the draft new designs at the Palmovka, Jiřího z Poděbrad, and Chodov metro stations. Furthermore, adjustments have been made to the rectangular plan, situated on glass stands adjacent to the doors. Babiš Loses Final Appeal Over Collaboration with Communist-Era Secret Police

Former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš lost his final appeal in Slovakia Wednesday in a case concerning allegations that he collaborated with communist-era secret police in what was then Czechoslovakia. Babiš, who was born in Slovakia, was suing the Institute for National Memory, which holds parts of his secret police files following the division of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993. In a decision on February 1 but only published Wednesday, Slovakia’s Constitutional Court, the highest court in the land, upheld the rulings by lower courts dismissing the case. Some of the files were destroyed, but the institute said those that still exist contain evidence that Babis was an agent under the code name “Bures” from 1982. Babiš has vehemently denied that. The regional court in the capital, Bratislava, originally rejected the lawsuit in 2018, but the Constitutional Court ordered a retrial, saying the institute could not be sued and the respondent should be the Slovak Interior Ministry. Will This Czech City’s Residents Delay the Country’s First High-Speed Railway?

Construction noise and traffic disruptions are among the chief concerns for the people of Usti nad Labem If everything goes according to plan, Czechia should see the construction of its first high-speed railway take off in 2027. The plan of the authorities is to link the capital Prague to the German city of Dresden passing through Ústí nad Labem, in northern Bohemia, which lies more or less in the middle. It turns out, however, that despite the great transport and economic development opportunities that such a grand project implies, not all residents of Usti nad Labem are excited about the route passing through their town. Some 600 complaints have been filed from the community raising objections about things like the risks, the noise pollution and the traffic-related disruptions that the railway construction would invariably entail. Czechia Will NOT Have Euro Adoption Commissioner

European Affairs Minister Martin Dvořák (STAN) won’t appoint a commissioner for euro adoption, Prime Minister Petr Fiala of the Civic Democrats said on Tuesday evening after a special meeting of coalition government leaders. Fiala stated that legislative issues related to the Czech Republic’s potential entry into the mechanism or the eurozone would be evaluated by the Legislative Council of the Government by October. The previous day Mr. Dvořák had announced that he was naming economist Petr Zahradník in that position. Other coalition parties criticized the minister for this move, as the government hadn’t agreed on filling the position of the national coordinator for euro introduction since 2017.
