Czechia Considers Stringent Firearm Laws Post University Shooting

Czech lawmakers will meet with Interior Ministry officials and experts on Wednesday to discuss a possible tightening of gun laws in the wake of the tragic shooting at Charles University on 21 December, in which a student killed 14 people before turning the gun on himself. Until now, Czechia has been one of the countries that has been proud of its gun legislation, citing it as exemplary. This was evident during the negotiation of the 2017 EU Firearms Directive, which tightened up the possession of weapons in the EU. Czechia was actively against the new law, and after its approval, the country even filed an unsuccessful lawsuit. Recently, the Czech government proposed a new national arms legislation in response to the EU directive in 2022. The proposal was already in the final stages of discussion. However, in response to the events of December, it is now being considered for reopening and making further amendments to make it stricter, as the school shooter was in legal possession of eight guns. Running as an activity, says Carlo Capalbo, will never die. As a sport, however, he believes it is facing big challenges. That’s what keeps him up at night. The passionate Neapolitan has long found himself under running’s spell and is now a key figure in the world of road racing. He is the founder and head of RunCzech, a Prague-based organization which organizes and stages a range of major international running events but also, under Capalbo’s motto of “All Runners are Beautiful”, aims to connect and grow running communities. It’s that key element of connection where he believes the real issue lies. His chief concern is that there is nothing of substance tying the recreational participant in the pack to the elite athlete on the front line. “In the long term, if we fail to bring the front of the race closer to the back of the race, we risk losing the masses,” he says. “We lose the spectators, but as a consequence we also lose the fans who then want to take part in the races. Rising Unemployment in Czechia: More Job Seekers Than Vacancies

In December last year, unemployment in the Czech Republic rose to 3.7 percent from November’s 3.5 percent. Since last January, this marked the first time that there were more registered job seekers than vacancies. According to data released by the Czech Labor Office, job seekers increased by 16,000 to 279,227, while vacancies decreased by 7,000 to 271,789. This trend of rising unemployment at the end of the year is not new, as seasonal jobs in agriculture and construction often end with the onset of winter. Additionally, more people register for benefits as their fixed-term work contracts and agreements terminate or as self-employed individuals temporarily suspend their activities. Employers continue to seek employees in technical and labor professions, with a long-term demand for skilled artisans. Roughly three-quarters of vacant positions seek applicants with primary or lower education, and two-thirds of positions are suitable for foreigners. Those most commonly without work are people with lower qualifications, specifically those educated without a high school diploma and those with primary education. Jan Palach Square’s Potential Transformation Unfolds

Jan Palach Square in Prague could go under a possible transformation. Architects Králíček and Makarov are proposing modernization with an emphasis on history and the memory of the victims. The main feature will be a 30-meter-high pylon and a memorial site. The new space will connect the past with the future architecture. On Tuesday, 9 January, Prague police unveiled a new video showing the coordinated efforts of law enforcement and special forces during the shooting at the Faculty of Philosophy of Charles University. The footage provides a detailed account of the officers’ actions. The video captures the moment police entered the building, searching room by room in their pursuit of the shooter. Timely timestamps accompany the footage, enhancing viewers’ comprehension of the law enforcement’s strategies. In addition to the building search, the video reveals the scene of the shooter’s lifeless body. The sharpshooters strategically positioned themselves in a nearby hotel, aligning with the shooter’s elevation. From this vantage point, they patiently awaited his approach to the gallery. When one of the sharpshooters aimed at him, the assailant initially seemed to surrender by dropping his weapon and raising his hands. However, he retrieved his weapon and took his own life. Czech-Slovak Expedition Finds Ancient Mayan City in Guatemala

A Czech-Slovak archaeological team has discovered an almost 3,000-year-old Mayan city in northern Guatemala, a press release by the Neuron Foundation, which financially supported the expedition, revealed on Tuesday. Named Yax Balam, meaning First Jaguar, this city has emerged as a pivotal discovery shedding light on a previously unknown Maya settlement, or rather, a series of urban centers. This newfound urban center, nestled within the dense jungle, is believed to be the oldest in the region and concurrently the largest yet undiscovered settlement in the northeastern Petén region. Its discovery will enable researchers to explore crucial phases of Maya history. The excavation in Guatemala yielded a treasure trove of artifacts, including palaces, statues, ritual remnants, and astronomical observatories of immense scientific significance. Professor Milan Kováč explains, “The city is one of the first Mayan city-states, as indicated by ‘Yax,’ meaning the beginning. Czech National Bank Warns of Eurozone’s Uncertain Future

Czech politicians debating whether to adopt the euro should take into account the rather “unflattering” economic situation in Eurozone countries as the group’s future remains uncertain, a report published by the Czech National Bank (CNB) reads. In its report, the CNB points out that there has been no progress in deepening economic and monetary union and that the architecture of the euro area remains incomplete. The CNB also warns that the future development of the monetary union is unpredictable. “The fiscal position of most euro area countries remains unflattering, with budget deficits from the coronavirus crisis only slowly reducing and debt levels in some countries at the limits of sustainability,” reads the fresh analysis. “The questions of the appropriate timing of the Czech Republic’s possible entry into the euro area and the impact of such a move on the Czech Republic can thus be answered only with great difficulty,” the analysis adds.
