The public can now enjoy the picturesque gardens of the Straka Academy, the seat of the Czech government, every Saturday from May 4th until mid-October. As Pražský patriot reports, this marks the third year the gardens have been opened for summer visits, allowing people to explore this beautiful space between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm. The entrance is located on Kosárkova nábřeží in Prague 1. Following a renovation between 2021 and 2022, the gardens were redesigned to serve not only official functions but also offer regular public access. “Opening the gardens to the public was a key goal of the renovation two years ago,” said Jana Kotalíková, head of the Government Office. “We’re excited to introduce a new audio guide this season, providing visitors with fascinating insights into the garden’s history and the Straka Academy building itself.” On May 4th, an open day will also be held at Kramář’s Villa on Letná, accessible from Gogolova Street. Czechia’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged month on month at 2.9% in March, Eurostat, the European Union’s (EU) statistical office, reported on Friday. This is the lowest result in the EU, Eurostat wrote, adding that the same unemployment rate was also recorded in Poland. The number of unemployed decreased to 515,000 in March from 516,000 in February, Eurostat pointed out. The general level of unemployment in the EU lay at 6 percent in March, a decrease by 0.1 percent when compared to February. On the other hand, Greece and Spain maintained the highest unemployment rates; with more than one in ten people who are able registering for employment. Eurostat estimates that 13.258 million persons in the EU, of whom 11.087 million in the euro area, were unemployed in March 2024. Compared with February 2024, unemployment decreased by 74 thousand in the EU and by 94 thousand in the euro area. A Scottish man is missing in Prague after “jumping off a party boat for a swim”. Joop Sparkes, from Galashiels, reportedly went overboard during a organized party boat trip with friends on the Vltava River at around 1 am on Sunday, April 27. His girlfriend, Charley Maben, and members of his family have flown out to Prague in an effort to try and locate him, but have yet to find any answers. Prague’s legendary Spirála theater is set to make a return this autumn after a two-decade hiatus. Reborn as the multi-genre venue Nová Spirála, the iconic structure within the Prague Exhibition Center promises a unique experience. The 29th edition of the Prague International Marathon takes place this Sunday, May 5th, impacting traffic flow in the city center. Expect temporary road closures and changes to tram and bus routes throughout the event. The marathon starts at 9:00 am from Old Town Square, with runners traversing a 42.195 km course across various Prague districts. The race concludes around 4:00 pm, with most closures lifted shortly after. Police will manage traffic flow from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, gradually closing and opening streets along the route. Normal traffic resumes outside this timeframe, except for specific areas near construction zones like Pařížská, Old Town Square, and Václavské náměstí. E-scooter accidents are becoming a major cause for alarm, with a disturbing trend of riders operating under the influence of alcohol. Statistics released by the Czech police reveal that a staggering 42% of e-scooter accidents in the past year involved riders who were intoxicated. As Novinky.cz reports, last year alone saw 499 scooter-related traffic accidents, with 403 caused by the scooter rider. Tragically, four people lost their lives in these incidents. While this is the first year the police have separated scooter statistics, data from the Prague Emergency Medical Service paints a worrying picture of a rapidly escalating problem. “In 2015, we responded to 30 cases of falls and injuries involving scooters. Last year, that number jumped to over 300,” stated Jana Poštová. “Almost no one wears helmets or protective gear, and alcohol use is extremely common among scooter riders,” she added. Czech customs officers intercepted a significant drug smuggling operation at Václav Havel Airport last week, seizing 4.5 kilograms of cocaine from a 44-year-old Polish man. As Novinky.cz reports, the suspect, who arrived on a flight from Medellín, Colombia, via Bogotá and Frankfurt, was detained following a tip-off from the National Drug Control Centre. During a routine check, customs officials discovered four concealed blocks of an unknown substance within the man’s luggage. Slovakia has granted temporary asylum to Artem Marchevsky, a pro-Russian propagandist and former Ukrainian TV producer, Czech newspaper Denik N reported on April 30. The decision to grant asylum was made by the Slovak Interior Ministry, according to Marchevsky’s lawyer, Leonid Kushnarenko. Czechia previously denied asylum to the propagandist, imposing sanctions on him and freezing his assets in the country. Representative spaces of Liechtenstein Palace on Kampa will be open to the public. Guided tours will take place from 9 am to 5 pm. The limit of visitors is 20 people per one guided tour. The Liechtenstein Palace, whose history dates back to the middle of the 16th century, is one of the dominants of Kampa in Prague. Currently, it is used by the Czech Government for official functions.
