Prague City Tourism is hoping to attract new demographics to the city, distancing itself from its reputation as a party destination. Given its low cost and abundance of bars, Prague holds a reputation as a cheap city to drink in, with young tourists and backpackers flocking to the city under the allure of cheap drinks and parties. Struggling with this reputation, the City of Prague is designing methods to attract different demographics to the city, focusing on the vibrant cultural scene Prague has to offer. Additionally, a new app is in development, and will soon be available online for tourists – providing them with a brief introduction to the culture in Prague, alongside a catalogue of self-guided tours and cultural events. The research for the app was assisted by scientists from the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Ten versions of the app will be available, covering the ten countries that tourists most often travel from. The most frequent foreign visitors come from Germany, Poland, USA, Great Britain, Italy, France, Spain, South Korea, Israel and China/Taiwan, with visitors from each country seeking a different experience from the city. Construction Company, Metroslav, has begun large-scale renovations on Prague Department store, OD Máj. Given its status as a cultural moment, many elements from the original building will be preserved – a decision made in agreement with preservationists. “We would like to open Máj to the public in a modernised form in the first half of 2024. The total costs after the completion of the complete reconstruction will reach four billion crowns,” said developer Václav Klán, who manages Amadeus Real Estate. Chief Architect of the renovations, Milan Mlady, believes the project will reinvigorate the area as a cultural and entertainment centre. Metroslav is making efforts to maintain and preserve the original appearance of the monument. During their planning phase, they collaborated with the original architects, Martin Rajniš and John Eisler, and additionally consulted both urban planning and historic preservation groups. “Even after the reconstruction, the house will look like it is the original house, it will just have a full-fledged new cladding, except for the facades, which are distinctive,” said Mlady. The building – standing on the site of the Neo-Gothic Šlik Palace – was originally completed in April 1975, and declared a cultural monument by the Ministry of Culture in 2006.
A Czech medical volunteer who, as part of the Phoenix project, was helping with the treatment of Ukrainian soldiers on the front line, was killed over the weekend. The spokesman for the Czech Foreign Ministry confirmed it on Monday. This is the second such case in the last year. The Phoenix project said in a Facebook post that the volunteer is being transported home to the Czech Republic. “One of our brave medical volunteers in Donbas received shrapnel wounds. His condition has stabilized now, but the situation is serious and it is impossible to predict developments. We are doing everything in our power so that he can return to his homeland as soon as possible,” it was stated yesterday. The victim was an important member of the Phoenix group, who saved 25 people during the last trip alone. New data from Eurostat and the Czech Statistical Office suggests a sudden decline in the number of children born per woman in the Czech Republic. This comes after the fertility rate reached its highest point since the 1990s in 2021, with 1.83 births per woman on average. The introduction of Euro 7 standards, which would reduce emission limits for motor vehicles, would have an adverse effect on Škoda Auto. The European Commission-proposed standards would mean Škoda Auto could no longer produce Fabia, Scala or Kamiq cars, and therefore, around 3,000 layoffs. New statistics reveal the influx of self-employed Ukrainians and Russians within the Czech Republic over the course of 2022 and 2023. Between 2019 and 2021, 207 Ukrainian entrepreneurs registered a new business per month, while in 2022, the average grew to 710 per month. A similar trend is apparent with Russian entrepreneurs as well, with 63 businesses registered each month in 2022 – an increase from the 51 per month before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These trends were reflected in recent analysis by the Czech Credit Bureau (CRIF). “The largest number of Ukrainians started business here from last August to November, when more than a thousand entrepreneurs of Ukrainian nationality started their activities every month. In some months, this was as much as 18 percent of the total number of new entrepreneurs in the Czech Republic. For January and February this year, the monthly average is already lower, i.e. 708, which is still a lot compared to the years before the war,” said Věra Kameníčková, CRIF analyst. A Czech volunteer who is helping in the east of Ukraine with the treatment of soldiers on the contact line as part of Project Phoenix has been seriously wounded in Donbas. “One of our brave volunteer medics received a shrapnel wound in Donbas. His condition is stable at the moment, but the situation is difficult, and it is impossible to predict the further development of events. We are doing everything to get him back home as soon as possible.” His transport to Czechia is being organised. As part of Project Phoenix, Czech medics teach soldiers the basics of providing medical aid as well as transport the wounded from the contact line. A spokesman for the organisation told Czech TV that the wounded volunteer was helping to evacuate one of the wounded. “Unfortunately, there was artillery shelling during this [evacuation of wounded – ed.], and he sustained shrapnel wounds,” he said, adding that wounds were relatively serious. As a result of Russian shelling, a Polish volunteer was injured near Bakhmut when his minibus was hit by a rocket.

Once again, strong winds have carried sand grains from the Sahara Desert to Central Europe. According to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute, on Sunday, March 19, these grains may fall along with rain in the Czech Republic, settling in characteristic orange streaks on windows, cars, and other exterior surfaces. In the eastern regions of the country, the concentration of sand grains will be so high that they will color the sky orange-red, a phenomenon visible at both sunrise and sunset. This occurrence will also reduce the amount of sunlight that passes through, which will affect the daytime air temperature. Additionally, it may cause breathing difficulties for people with chronic respiratory diseases. New Czech President Petr Pavel has visited his Polish counterpart, Andrzej Duda, in Warsaw, with the pair hailing their country’s close relations and shared support for Ukraine. “I very much appreciate that cooperation between the Czech Republic and Poland is at such a high level,” he said. “Throughout history, I don’t think our relations have been on such a level as they are now.” The plans for president Petr Pavel’s first 100 days in office have been made public.
