Czechia has been issued a CZK 54 million fine for not yet applying EU rules for protecting whistle-blowers who report on corruption and other illegal activities. The deadline for applying the EU directive ran out last December. The chairman of the Czech and Moravian Trade Union of Workers in Education, František Dobšík, said that salaries for school employees should be raised to 130 percent of the country’s average gross wage. He added that the union is concerned the government will put priority on cuts rather than on this raise. President Petr Pavel started working from his new office at Prague Castle on Monday. He had been working from Prague’s Hrzánský Palace while his office was being inspected and prepared. The president said he had ordered a thorough inspection to make sure that there were no listening devices installed. The popular Vltava River ferries have been running again since last weekend. Other links are now in operation until October 29th, in addition to the P1 and P2 ferries, which operate all year. However, there is one minor difference this year: the commonly used ferry from Holešovice to Karlin will only transport people until the new HolKa walking bridge opens. The new bridge is slated to debut this summer. The boat will also not service Stvanice Island because the eastern end of the island is blocked off by the new walking bridge building site. Prague boats transported over 619,000 passengers last year. The P2 route between Podbaba and Podhoří was typically the largest ferry, carrying 219,000 passengers and 23,000 bicycles. Each day of this week was given special names because of the very specific traditions. Let’s learn more about Blue Monday. “Blue” is actually the name of the so called “Blue Mondays” which were Mondays on which people didn’t work. It’s a day of worship and honoring. People are supposed to be calm, collected and silent. Another theory says that the name is a literal translation of the German expression Blauer Montag which means a Monday on which one is hangover and unable to work (which was surely quite fitting also because people liked to drink a celebrate the night before knowing that they wouldn’t have to work the next day). Sloup Castle is a rock castle located in the northern part of the Czech Republic. The castle dates all the way back to the 14th century AD when the area it is in was part of the Kingdom of Bohemia. Due to its strategic position, Sloup Castle was a formidable stronghold. Nevertheless, the castle did not serve this defensive function throughout its history, having undergone several transformations. Most recently, Sloup Castle was acquired by the House of Kinský, who turned the landmark into a tourist attraction. The Historical Origins Of Sloup Castle Sloup Castle is situated in the town of Sloup v Čechách (meaning “Sloup in Bohemia”), in Liberec, the northernmost part of Bohemia. The castle lies about 117.5 km from Prague. Sloup Castle sits on top of a 33 m high sandstone rock column, providing its long-dead occupants with a commanding view of the surrounding alluvial valley. Based on traffic data gathered during the restoration of the tram route between Malostranská and Ujezd, Prague hopes to reduce congestion in the city center. The Mala Strana neighborhood should be closed to through traffic in the future, according to Zdeněk Hřib, Deputy Mayor for Transport. In the next three weeks, the government will assess the data in collaboration with the Prague City Transport Company, the Technical Administration of Communications, and the ICT Operator. “There was no traffic jam in Prague following the closure of Mala Strana because traffic was diverted to the Blanka tunnel,” added Hřib. “The primary reason for investing tens of billions of crowns in the Blanka tunnel was to settle down Mala Strana,” he added. “Now we have experienced a kind of test, which should have been done in 2015 when Blanka opened, and we will evaluate the impact,” Hřib said. “We will also have an intensive dialogue not only at the municipality but also with the Prague 1 district about how we will approach this problem in the future,” he added. Residents of Prague will be able to explore Easter marketplaces, the Museum of Public Transportation, and the Prague Zoo. This year, the largest marketplaces, which are usually hosted in the city center, will last for several weeks. Good Friday is April 7th, and Easter Monday is April 10th. The Old Town Square market began on March 25th. Vendors sell Easter decorations such Easter eggs or pottery, as well as snacks. A must-visit address for craft beer lovers in Prague is the HANGÁR. More precisely, the “HANGÁR Pub and Beer Shop” in Prague’s Letná district. HANGÁR is the house pub of the brewery of the same name, a so-called “flying” brewery, or to use the more familiar American expression, a gypsy brewery. The last living Czech pilot who fought the Nazis while serving with Britain’s Royal Air Force during World War II has died at age 100, A community center for war veterans in the Czech Republic city of Brno, his hometown, said Bocek died on Saturday. The Czech Defense Ministry confirmed his death. No further details were given. “General Bocek was fighting for our country to be democratic, free and independent,” Prime Minister Petr Fiala said. Born Feb 25, 1923, Bocek fled Czechoslovakia in 1939 at age 16 following the country’s occupation by Germany. He fought the Nazis in France and then moved to Britain, where he served as a technician in the air force’s No. 312 Squadron before joining the RAF’s No. 310 Squadron as a pilot in 1944. Both fighter squadrons had Czechoslovak pilots.
Within a few weeks, a RМ-70 rocket launcher along and 365 missiles will be transferred to Ukraine from the Czech Republic. However, this is not part of and aid package from the government, but is the result of €1.2 million donations made by Czech citizens.
