World-renowned Heineken brewery is spearheading a new concept for franchised pubs. Branded pubs have started to flood the Czech Republic in the past few years, becoming quite popular with brands such as Plzeňský Prazdroj and Budějovický Budvar. This year, Heineken is opening its own restaurant concept for the Zlatý Bažant beer brand. The first Bažantovna has already been opened at the beginning of January in Prague’s Chodov district, with others to follow in Brno, Chomutov and Jihlava. In total, the brewery plans to open nine locations across the Czech Republic in 2023 and 2024. Romana Domanická, a young designer, is credited with creating the Bažantovna (Pheasant House) design, which is a restaurant concept modelled for the Zlatý Bažant (Golden Pheasant) beer brand. The design’s colour palette is simplistic yet elegant, with gold and black colours complementing the glass designs decorating the back-lit bar. And while this has been the case for over a decade, the Central European nation continues to spearhead liberal marijuana policies in the region. The legislation is not only liberal for marijuana use as they have also legalized other cannabis-derived products such as Delta-8 gummies, pre-rolls, and flowers This article lists seven things about marijuana use in the Czech Republic. 1. A new apartment building was built on Bieblova Street in Smíchov a few years ago. The street is named after the Czech poet Konstantin Biebl (by the way – the later poet fought at the front of the First World War in his youth; when he was twenty years old, he was wounded, captured, and sentenced to death – he saved himself by escaping from captivity). Therefore the architect and the developer decided that the new house would pay tribute to the poet in an unusual form – with its facade. The facade alternates between glass surfaces and fixed panels that hide the titles of Biebel’s poems in a jumble of letters. The panels made of special material have carved letters. During the day, the panels are white and the letters are black. At night, the contrast is reversed, and the illuminated letters stand out from the darkened facade. The letters are not arranged randomly on the panels, but the titles of Konstantin Biebel’s poems can be read from them. On one of the panels, the poet’s name is also included.
Prague, like many large European cities, harbours a variety of scams and frauds. A common scam involves performances with exotic animals, in which tourists pay for the privilege of taking a photo with snakes, coloured pigeons, owls, and a variety of other animals. During the pandemic, these scams seemed to vanish from the streets of Prague, but as tourists began to flock back to the capital of the Czech Republic, so did the people engaging in this illegal activity. Despite the concerted and continuous effort on the part of the Municipal Police, the eradication of this fraud has proven difficult – if not impossible. The spokeswoman for the Municipal Police, Irena Seifertova, informed the public that the most recent arrest involving exotic animals occurred on January 26th, 2023. In this instance, a man, along with two assistants, were spotted soliciting tourists to take photos with barn owls in Old Town Square. The three suspects were charging anywhere from hundreds to several thousand crowns for this opportunity. The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the research division of the Economist Group, which publishes the weekly newspaper The Economist, has increased Czechia’s ranking in its 2022 Democracy Index by four places compared to 2021. A discount on insurance premiums for some part-time employees has started to apply. Employers can now claim a premium discount for those with part-time contracts of eight to thirty hours a week. The Prague zoo is going to open a new Arctic pavilion for polar bears. It will replace the existing one, which opened back in 1933. According to Deputy Mayor Petr Hlubuček, the cost of the project will be about CZK 800 million. The zoo may receive a building permit before the end of this year. If everything goes smoothly, construction will begin in 2023 and take about two years. It will be the largest investment in the history of all zoos in the Czech Republic. “The present polar bear pavilion is more than 80 years old and totally inconvenient. In addition, it is located on a southern slope,” said the director of the Prague Zoo, Miroslav Bobek. The Prague transport company has presented the restored articulated tram Tatra K2. With the license number “7000”, it will hit the streets on Sunday, February 5. It will operate daily and will delight the passengers on the retro route 23, as well as on the historic lines 41 and 42. The retro tram will also be available for rent for commercial and entertainment purposes. The Tatra K2 was manufactured by the Prague-based ČKD Praha in 1967-1983. It was the first articulated tram in the history of Czechoslovakia. The model was designed on the basis of the legendary T3 wagon. Curiously enough, the Tatra K2 was never used in Prague but only in Brno, Ostrava and Bratislava. In 2009, after 32 years of use, it was decommissioned and transported to the Krásnány Depot in Bratislava, but never put into passenger operation. Since the tram was not subjected to major structural modifications, it is preserved in exceptionally good condition with many original elements.
The Czech Republic’s incoming president said the only limit to weapons deliveries to Ukraine should be nuclear arms, and he expressed confidence that Ukrainian forces can defeat Russia. Petr Pavel, a retired NATO general who takes office in March, also said President Vladimir Putin’s government isn’t the only one to possess nuclear weapons. “I believe that we shouldn’t put any cap on equipment,” Pavel told Bloomberg Television in an interview in Prague Friday. “The only exception is nuclear weapons and direct involvement of NATO in the conflict.” Pavel secured a convincing victory over billionaire former Prime Minister Andrej Babis on Saturday after a campaign that pledged to return the Czech Republic’s highest office to the European mainstream.
