However, the Charles Bridge is a relatively modern addition to Prague compared to the city’s history. In the 10th century, there are some references to a wooden bridge. However, Vladislav II had a stone bridge built around 1170 and named it Judith’s Bridge. The Czech Government has decided not to extend the duration of checks at border crossings with Slovakia, and thus the checks will end on the night from Saturday to Sunday. The termination of the measure was announced on the same day by Czech Interior Minister Vít Rakušan. Prague Zoo has announced the birth of a rare baby pangolin. According to the zoo’s director Pavel Bobek it is the first pangolin to be born in Europe. A rare baby pangolin was born early Thursday morning at the Prague Zoo. According to the zoo’s director Pavel Bobek it is the first pangolin to be born in Europe. “Just before 4 o’clock this morning, a Chinese pangolin female Run Hou Tang gave birth to a „pangopup“. This is the first pangolin born in Europe. It weighs 135 grams. However, it is important to add that the following days may be critical,” wrote on Instagram the Prague Zoo. The zoo acquired the pair of pangolins last April from the Taipei Zoo thanks to a partnership agreement between Prague and the Taiwanese capital. There are eight species of pangolins. Some of them live in Asia, others in Africa. In traditional Chinese medicine, the scales that protect their bodies are said to have a healing effect. Pangolins are unique among mammals because of their scales, which are made of keratin, the stuff of hair and fingernails. They live on a diet of ants and termites—hence their nickname “scaly anteater.” The scales are their major defense mechanism; when faced with danger, they curl up in an immobile, hard ball. The “Gift for Putin” project, founded by Czech businessman Dalibor Dědek, announced the transfer to Ukraine of two armored vehicles that will be used to evacuate Ukrainian soldiers wounded in battles with Russian aggressors. From 2026 elections in Czechia may take place on Fridays only, not spread across Fridays and Saturdays as at present. The government approved an amendment to that effect on Wednesday, the minister of the interior, Vít Rakušan, told journalists. “Ukraine deserves to join NATO as soon as Russia’s war on the country ends,” said the newly elected Czech President Petr Pavel to BBC. Wolt drivers have called a strike for tomorrow, February 1st, to protest against the 20% cut of their bonuses. A new remuneration system introduced by Wolt has angered the majority of drivers. This will be the first similar action by couriers of delivery platforms in the Czech Republic. The new payment system is still rolling out and Wolt clearly intends to address some of the oversights. In a letter to couriers, for example, it says that short-haul orders in future “may be made more attractive”. Plzeňský Prazdroj’s new brewery warehouse launched an automated rail system capable of storing more beer and loading it onto trucks much more efficiently Last week, the beer warehouse of Plzeňský Prazdroj, announced they have installed a new fully automated trolley system. The system has also reduced the CO2 emissions of the warehouse and is part of the firm’s bid to become a sustainability benchmark in the brewing industry. According to the company, the automated system has been able to increase storage space, lower emissions and increase offloading speeds significantly. Additionally, it’s the biggest investment in its production line since 2006 with around 780 million Czech crowns. The warehouse also has three water reservoirs capable of capturing more than 800 cubic metres of rain for recycling. Additionally, according to a statement, the facility will get an upgrade with a solar roof, dropping energy consumption even further. A memorial to victims of the Holocaust of the Roma and Sinti people in South Bohemia will cost almost CZK 100 million. The memorial is set to be built on the site of a World War II concentration camp for Roma and Sinti at Lety in the Písek area, which until recently housed a pig farm.
