After postponing their 2020 tour to 2021, and then once more to this summer, Pearl Jam has finally hit the road on their most recent European tour. On July 22nd, they are coming to Prague’s O2 Arena as they wrap up their latest tour. They will be supported by the band White Reaper. Pearl Jam, started in Seattle, Washington, will perform an extensive set list of their biggest hits from their over a 30-year run. The set includes a number of songs off of their most recent release, Gigaton. It is their eleventh studio album and was released in March of 2020, just as concerts were shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It has topped several charts in Europe. This long-awaited tour was originally set to accompany said release. Eddie Vedder is still performing the lead vocals, alongside Mike McCready, Matt Cameron, Jeff Ament, and Stone Gossard, with the occasional fill-in, including touring musician Josh Klinghoffer. The band and its members have remained remarkably constant over the years, with all the founding members still performing. Seen as one of the vanguards of American grunge and punk rock, their distinctive riff-heavy, gritty but still catchy sound is sure to fill...
The cable car between Podbaba and Bohnice seems to be one step closer to reality. The transport company announced an international competition in which 23 applicants from nine European countries applied. Now the expert jury has selected five finalists, including four international firms and one Czech representative. The winner of the competition should be announced during September. The connection between Bohnice and Prague 6 is currently rather challenging. Even though the districts are about 3.5 kilometers apart as the crow flies, getting physically from one district to another is a half-day trip at best. It involves multiple transfers–the cable car will help immensely. A cable car will offer a simpler connection. Even if a tram connection is also planned in the future, these plans are very distant. The cable car seems to be significantly closer to realization. The expert jury has now selected 5 finalists, who are tasked with preparing and presenting the architectural design of all three stations and five supports. The Czech design studio Olgoj Chorchoj is among the five finalists. “From the submitted proposals, the jury will select the three best, while DPP will conclude a cooperation agreement with the authors of the first proposal in the...

All-day breakfasts, Italian wine with salty tartlets, handmade pizza, and pasta, open kitchen with a varied menu you can find this all in one place. My friends often ask me to recommend a place for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and also to have a meeting over a glass of wine. They are always surprised that for each of these occasions I recommend only one place: La Mouka. La Mouka is an Italian restaurant which is located near I.P. Pavlova, where you can also have a delicious lunch (during weekdays from 12 am to 2 pm there is a 20% discount on the entire menu), meet friends for a cup of coffee with some dessert, watch how homemade pasta is prepared on open kitchen and just take a break from the bustle of the city. I like everything in here: the picture on the wall, light and air, the presence of an air conditioner, a cozy summer terrace, an open kitchen, a relaxed atmosphere, and a bar. I love this place, especially because of its budget and varied menu. It was my next impression after the local atmosphere – well-coordinated menu, with a pleasant selection of simple dishes, each of which,...
Holešovice, the surroundings of the O2 Arena, and the industrial zone in Šterboholy. These spots glow red in the temperature image from June 18th taken from the International Space Station. The sun heats surfaces to more than 45 degrees. What exactly does the picture show? What are its pitfalls? How can photovoltaic panels improve the situation? Landscape planning specialist Michael Pondelíček from the Prague Institute of Planning and Development answered all this and more. Could you describe what the June 18 image taken from the International Space Station shows? It shows what the temperature conditions are in Prague in instantaneous temperatures. So it shows the current temperatures in the given places. Since it was a warm day, we can therefore conclude that the image shows us an instantaneous temperature map. It is a simple idea of how the city is doing thermally on a normal day. We can also see white or dark red places on it where the temperature is around 50 degrees Celsius. And also the blue or green areas which are cooler and where the temperature drops to 30 degrees Celsius. Yes. The main one is the cooling corridor in Prague, which is the Vltava and its...
The Prague 1 district is the most flooded with shared scooters in the entire city, on which tourists also endanger pedestrians on the sidewalks. The management of the town hall is preparing several steps to regulate their movement in the center. So far, there is a debate about the introduction of zones in frequented places, where the motor of the scooters will be turned off and it will not be possible to continue with them. “From our point of view, electric scooters are just a tourist attraction that serves drunken alcoholic tourists to organize races. We have many cases where pedestrians have been injured. We take it as someone privatizing public space for their business,” says the mayor of Prague 1, Petr Hejma (STAN). According to him, the city district is trying to get rid of the scooters in the same way that the municipality succeeded in the case of segways. In 2016, the city adopted their regulation in the conservation area and in other places with a high concentration of pedestrians. For now, however, the Prague 1 City Hall is trying to agree on certain restrictions with the largest operators of scooters, Lime and Bolt. “Discarded scooters are especially...

On the evening of Thursday, July 14, the lower house of the Czech Parliament approved the bill on the so-called “economical tariff.” This is a program to help residents pay bills for electricity and gas in the new heating season. All the MPs present voted in favor. The program envisages that the state will compensate all household consumers with up to CZK 16,000 for energy costs. In an earlier version, the bill only assisted with electricity and gas, but the deputies added to it also heating. The Government will determine the exact amount of compensation for specific cases by a separate decree. This is expected to take place in early August. Compensation will be provided automatically in the form of a discount. Residents will not have to file an application or additionally ask about it in another way – the energy companies will independently conduct the recalculation and resolve all issues with the state directly. However, compensation will not apply to temporary residences (e.g. cottages) and tariffs that include recharging points for electric vehicles. “People will see the results in their invoices from October 1. The support will be valid for the whole heating season,” stated the Minister of Industry...
by Juliana Zappitell and Taylor Coester Captured Russian military equipment showcased in Prague’s Letna park drew dozens of visitors on Tuesday during the first full day of an exhibit arranged by Ukraine’s government to keep the spotlight on their fight against Moscow. The exhibit, featuring damaged tanks, trucks and other equipment used by Russian forces following the Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, underlines how Kyiv has sought to whip up support for their fight and request for more assistance and weapons from western nations. “Be brave like Ukraine. And do not forget that even after 139 days after the beginning of the Russian invasion the fights still do not ease. That is just the reason for the exhibition of destroyed and captured vehicles of the Russians,” Czech Interior Minister Vít Rakušan said in a Facebook post. Five tanks captured by Ukrainian forces — including one damaged in battle and weighing 46.5 tonnes — lined the gravel ground of the park filled with locals riding bikes, walking their dogs and relaxing on the grass. The exhibition was previously displayed in the Castle Square in Warsaw, Poland, and will remain in Prague until July 24th. “The destroyed equipment is a hope for...
Cities face critical challenges on the path to sustainable mobility, yet they also hold the key to action. More than 70% of Europeans live in cities, and urban areas account for around 23% of EU greenhouse gas emissions from transport. At the same time, European cities are home to some of the boldest and most innovative solutions for passenger and freight transit. This year’s edition of the Urban Mobility Days will address these key challenges. From 20 to 22 September, the city of Brno will host the Urban Mobility Days 2022 event. This biennial conference, jointly organised in 2022 by the European Commission, and the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU, is a major event in the urban mobility calendar. Participants will have the change to meet in person, whereas at the same time there will be a virtual option available. “It is a great opportunity for Brno that was involved twice in CIVITAS projects to host Urban Mobility Days 2022 during Czech presidency of the Council of the European Union. We are looking forward to welcome participants in Brno and share successes, experiences and know-how in the field of sustainable urban mobility with the representatives of cities, European politicians and mobility experts,” said Markéta Vaňková, Mayor of...
