Winter is just around the corner and many of us are thinking about where to spend a week or two during the holidays or later, at the beginning of 2022. Try the Czech mountains this year! You might not find glaciers there, but the ski slopes are excellent quality. Moreover, many ski resorts have improved or expanded their guest services. We will show you what’s new in the Czech mountains this year. New and Improved Ski Slopes One of the most popular ski resorts is in the Jizera Mountains near Liberec in North Bohemia: it is at one of the peaks, Ještěd. A ski slope called Nová Skalka is opening there. This slope was built before the previous winter season, but it did not open due to COVID-19; three other slopes were also expanded at that time. They are also now using the new Snow Factory system at Ještěd, which can make technical snow regardless of the ambient temperature. The season will definitely start on Saturday, 11 December. The existing learning surface at Ještěd has also been expanded with the FunArena where children can find a bobsleigh track, tubing and children’s snow park. The Tanvaldský Špičák resort, also in the Jizera Mountains, launched a detachable, 4-seat covered chairlift that considerably speeds up check-in for...
Despite the coronavirus pandemic, living standards in the Czech Republic approached the average level in the European Union last year. In addition, the Czech Republic maintained the lowest unemployment rate in the EU. Gross domestic product per capita based on purchasing power parity rose to 94 percent of the EU average last year from the previous 92 percent. The Czech Republic is thus at the level of Italy and above the level of Portugal (77 percent) and Spain (86 percent), according to data published by the Czech Statistical Office in the Statistical Yearbook 2021. This indicator was lowest in Bulgaria, which was at 55 percent of the EU average. On the other hand, Luxembourg had the highest level at 266 percent. The Czech economy contracted by 5.6 percent last year, which was the biggest decline in the history of the independent Czech Republic. Last year, the economies of all EU countries, except Ireland, declined. At the same time, last year, the country maintained the status of a country with the lowest unemployment rate within the EU for the fifth year in a row. Namely, it was at 2.6 percent. Poland had the second-lowest unemployment rate with 3.2 percent, followed by...
Cities are looking for a way around the government’s ban on Christmas markets. One trick, already in use by the city of Most, is to rename the traditional event; in their case, the Christmas market is now the Winter Farmers Market. Lawyers say government measures allow for different loops. However, they consider the ban on Advent markets to be meaningless. According to the daily Echo24, the cabinet of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) issued the ban before it was assessed by experts from the government’s legislative council. The stalls were already standing in the squares, the merchants had bought goods, and last Thursday a government decree banning the Christmas markets came. Some town halls immediately started counting losses. However, they did not give up in Most. Similarly, Prague 1 has transformed the Advent tradition into a cultural event, in which the government now allows the participation of hundreds of people. Both are likely to provide a way to circumvent government anti-pandemic measures. “The measure is so stupidly written that this procedure is really possible,” lawyer Ondřej Dostál, who has successfully challenged some anti-pandemic measures in court in the past. “For an incomprehensible reason, the measure is only aimed at the...
The goal of this new editor is to make adding rich content to WordPress simple and enjoyable. This whole post is composed of pieces of content—somewhat similar to LEGO bricks—that you can move around and interact with. Move your cursor around and you’ll notice the different blocks light up with outlines and arrows. Press the arrows to reposition blocks quickly, without fearing about losing things in the process of copying and pasting. What you are reading now is a text block the most basic block of all. The text block has its own controls to be moved freely around the post… … like this one, which is right aligned. Headings are separate blocks as well, which helps with the outline and organization of your content. A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words Handling images and media with the utmost care is a primary focus of the new editor. Hopefully, you’ll find aspects of adding captions or going full-width with your pictures much easier and robust than before. Try selecting and removing or editing the caption, now you don’t have to be careful about selecting the image or other text by mistake and ruining the presentation. Director Sam Hargrave has taken to Instagram to confirm that filming has officially begun on Extraction 2, the sequel to Netflix’s hit 2020 action thriller which stars Chris Hemsworth as black-ops mercenary Tyler Rake. In the Instagram video, Hargrave is walking through a snowy street in Prague, where Extraction 2 just started filming, with Hargrave saying he’s leaving a “train location.” Hargrave continues to say that the constant snow “looks pretty great on camera,” teasing that Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake will be facing some low temperatures in his next adventure after the previous film took place in Bangladesh. Extraction 2 will see Sam Hargrave returning to the director’s chair, while Joe Russo has once again written the script and will produce alongside Hemsworth and filmmaking partner Anthony Russo under AGBO, the production company headed by the two brothers. There is currently no release date for the upcoming sequel. Based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, Fernando León González, and Eric Skillman, Extraction had Netflix’s biggest premiere in history when it debuted on the streaming platform back in 2020. It’s estimated that 90 million households saw the movie within one month of its release. It didn’t take long for Netflix to greenlight a sequel, with writer and producer Russo...
A regular study by the European Commission has once again confirmed that the Czech Republic has one of the most expensive mobile tariffs in the European Union. Mobile users from neighbouring countries are significantly better off than they are over here. The Czech Republic was the worst of the entire “twenty-seven” in virtually all twelve consumer baskets compared, combining different data volumes with different numbers of free minutes. The last place is shared with Cyprus, compared to which the Czechia did better only in a basket with 20 GB of data and no free minutes. Cyprus, on the other hand, performed better with a basket with 0.5 GB of data and 30 free minutes. Placed at the top of each of the consumer baskets, Poland is traditionally the best-rated country for its cheap offers. Czech mobile users pay almost eight times more for this volume of services than Polish ones. It is the offers of Polish operators that are very often mentioned as a counterweight to the expensive mobile services of domestic operators. In terms of the most attractive prices, Poland is followed by Romania, Estonia, Spain, Ireland and Slovenia. The European Commission collected data for the current comparison during...

After the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping holidays, Giving Tuesday asks us to give back and do good, all while engaging in what the official GivingTuesday website calls “radical generosity” in our everyday lives. Founded in 2012 as a collaboration between New York City’s 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation, Giving Tuesday began as a way to encourage a “day that encourages people to do good,” according to the website, but has since become its own nonprofit — and a nationwide movement. It is in honour of good deeds that some of Prague’s monuments will light up today after dark. In addition to the traditional lighting of the Petrin Lookout Tower, the people of Prague will see a giant heart in the National Theatre building from five o’clock in the afternoon. Anyone can join on the most generous day of the year, and anyone and almost anything can join Giving Tuesday. In the Czech Republic, Giving Tuesday has been initiated by the Association of Social Responsibility for six years now. Those interested can be inspired by the initiative’s website, where they will find over two hundred challenges. Those interested can support, for example, children with cancer, single seniors, or the construction of a...
The Czech Republic’s outgoing and incoming prime ministers put aside their differences on Tuesday to support an initiative to administer 1 million COVID-19 booster shots in a week. Outgoing Prime Minister Andrej Babis and Petr Fiala, the prime minister-designate, voiced their support for the plan announced by the “Doctors help the Czech Republic” group that aims to provide relief struggling hospitals. “The pandemic doesn’t know any political barriers,” Babis said about the unusual partnership. “There are moments when we need to show our common will,” Fiala said. The country has been facing a record surge of coronavirus infections. The new daily increase hit an all-time high of almost 28,000 cases on Thursday. The infection rate was 1,230 new cases per 100,000 residents over the past seven days on Monday, currently making it one of the hardest-hit countries. A number of COVID-19 patients needing intensive care surpassed 1,000 on Monday for the first time since April 14, with the overall number of hospitalized at 6,394 on Monday. About 30% of them have received two shots of a vaccine, while authorities hope the booster shot makes a difference. The initiative has called on their colleagues from outpatient clinics to help speed up...
The travel-rule landscape is shifting before our eyes right now, but with the vaccination and booster rollouts continuing apace worldwide, stress-free holidays all round should be back with a bang next year. And with that in mind, Time Out has ranked the 16 best city breaks in Europe for 2022, these emerging destinations picked ‘because of their excellent food, culture, nightlife and community spirit – the things that have always made Europe’s cities such great places to be’. Time Out adds that ‘in these climate-conscious times, the list also features only places that are easy to get to by train and bus’. The No1 spot in the list is taken by Arles in France, with Brno second and Sheffield flying the flag for England in ninth place. Time Out describes Brno in this way: Although sandwiched between Prague and Vienna, self-confident Brno is no middle child. Once a powerhouse dubbed the ‘Moravian Manchester’, the laidback Czech second city has repositioned itself as a post-industrial science and tech hub. But you’ll find plenty of clues to Brno’s layered past at a clutch of offbeat underground attractions, including the mysterious brick cisterns at Žlutý Kopec, communist-era nuclear bunker 10-Z, and the ‘Denis’ bomb shelter under...
There will be no New Year’s fireworks and neither a videomapping show in Prague, Mayor Zdeněk Hřib announced today. The city’s authorities decided to not go ahead with traditional January 1 municipal events in view of the Covid situation. “We did not plan any fireworks this year either, but we were considering alternative ways to welcome the new year. We were waiting for the epidemic situation and anti-epidemic measures to develop. Given the current situation, we abandoned the planned activities,” Hofman said. Due to the current epidemic situation and the measures in force, the municipality does not plan any other New Year’s Eve. “We would not be able to guarantee the safety of visitors at such an event with regard to the transmission of the disease, and it would be difficult to ensure the spectators’ distances,” City Hall spokesperson Vít Hofman told the Czech News. In the past, Prague city traditionally welcomed the new year on January 1 with fireworks, which from January 1, 2020, have been replaced with a videomapping show, which, according to the city management, does not have negative consequences, such as noise and stress for animals. Among other reasons, last year the city wanted to save...
Czech President Miloš Zeman called on Visegrad countries to follow the Austrian example and make COVID-19 vaccines mandatory for everyone. “We should think about mandatory vaccination as Austria did because it seems like the only way to end the COVID crisis,” Zeman said during his online meeting with his counterparts from Visegrad countries – Slovakia, Hungary and Poland. Zeman could not join the V4 presidential meeting in person, as he was recently released from the hospital where he was treated for liver cirrhosis. He also tested positive for COVID-19. According to Zeman, politicians are avoiding obligatory vaccine decisions because it would be a very unpopular move. Zeman himself is aware that his supporters would be against such a measure. “All the politicians are afraid to say that mandatory vaccination is the only solution because they would lose votes. I can do it because after ten years, my presidential mandate is coming to an end,” Zeman said. Zeman is performing his duties again after a 6-week stay in hospital. As he has not completely recovered and he is COVID-19 positive, his ability to work is limited. On Friday, Zeman appointed Petr Fiala as the new Czech Prime Minister, raising eyebrows as...
