Everything is pointing to the establishment of a fourth center-right government in the Visegrad Group following the recent parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic. The SPOLU coalition received the most votes and is comprised of the right-wing Civic Democratic Party (ODS), the Christian Democrat-People’s Party union KDU-CSL, and the liberal-conservative TOP 09. Even though a new government has not yet been formed, and the coalition agreement between SPOLU and the second election block (PirSTAN) has not yet been signed, the future ruling camp is being put under constant pressure by the liberal-left environments and media. They are demanding one thing: that Petr Fiala’s government decisively cut themselves away from Poland and Hungary’s policies and even distance themselves from the V4, separate itself from Andrej Babis’ legacy (and therefore cease referring to the concept of national interest in foreign policy), and change its approach towards the EU’s migration policy. According to Ondřej Kolář from TOP 09, the Czech Republic will seek to implement a foreign policy based on Vaclav Havel’s values, accentuating human rights and civil society, and active membership in the EU and NATO. There are plans to revise relations with Russia and China. Similar opinions can even be heard...
The Hamburg/Berlin duo, which has filled Roxy to the top each time they performed in Prague, is bringing a live performance this time. They will perform at Roxy on November 12. Kollektiv Turmstrasse is a project initiated by the musicians Nico Plagemann and Christian Hilscher from Luebeck, Germany. The duo’s musical style can be broadly labeled as minimal techno. It was in 1998 when the two boys hung out together and decided to form a collective, back in Hamburg, on the Turmstrasse street. Their first tracks were inspired by early Detroit-Techno and Acid House, which changed into dubby groove techno-like releases by Raummusik, Mosaik, and Basic Channel. They turned into the main activity and resulted with their first release in 2001 on electronic parliament. Today, they stand behind a spree of legendary tracks, EPs, and albums, which got them as far as Solomun’s Diynamic label, for example. The duo has performed at such festivals as Melt, Homerun, Off Week and Distortion.

From 1 November, under the latest anti-covid-19 measures, restaurants will have to start checking their guests to see if they have been vaccinated against coronavirus, have a negative test, or have suffered from the disease in the last six months. It comes after the government approved a set of new measures against the spread of Covid-19 in a meeting on Wednesday. One of the measures has a direct impact on the operation of restaurants, which may affect how many unvaccinated guests will go to them. However, the government said that checking whether people who come to the restaurant are vaccinated or tested should not change much. Even now, the obligation to have a completed vaccination or a negative test on arrival at the restaurant applies, although the inspections are so far only random and carried out by hygienists or by the police. While some food businesses are ready for such inspections, others have reservations- especially since tests will soon be charged and could deter guests from visiting. Klára Černá, the owner of café Black Coffee in Frýdek-Místek, considers the whole idea of checking covid certificates to be wrong. “It seems inappropriate to the guests. In my opinion, we don’t even...
Papundekl Architects has turned a former car workshop in Prague into a bar and events space with a brutalist slant. Situated just south of Prague‘s scenic downtown district, Vršovice has transformed from blue-collar neighbourhood into a notable hipster area in recent years, and it’s a trend that has yet to see the end. Adding to the many bars and clubs that line the streets here is the newly opened K7.club with its street side bar. Designated as a community hub, and an aptly cool one at that, the venue occupies 133 sqm. ground floor space of an early 20th-century residential building and features an interior design by local architecture practice Papundekl. The venue, formerly a car repair shop, sees three distinct areas—an elongated bar, an elevated lounge and event space, and a private club space at the back. At the core, an open space for screening, restrooms, and the back end of the aforementioned bar can be found, all in an understated industrial style. Also, the façade has been slightly modified and now sees a doorway which has been slightly extended to match the window’s upper level and provide a greatly improved balance visually. As K7.club serves as a multifunctional space where various cultural events are...
With electricity and gas prices breaking records on the stock exchanges this year, Czechs will have to delve deeper into their pockets to foot their heating bills. Minister of Finance Alena Schillerova announced that the government wants to support Czech households and intent to reduce the value-added tax (VAT) rate on electricity and gas to zero. “If passed by the parliament, the zero VAT rate will also apply for this November and December. Unless approved also by the European Commission, waiving VAT on energy sales would contravene the European Union VAT directive,” she added. The Ministry hopes for an exemption from VAT for energy for the whole of 2022 Wholesale electricity and gas prices are breaking records, the market situation caused the collapse of several energy supply companies in the Czech Republic. As the country has large reserves of hard coal, coal-fired thermal power holds a significant share in the country’s generation mix. In 2020, renewable power generation share in total...

From November 1, Pražská plynárenská will increase the price of its natural gas by an average of 24.6 percent. The company has justified the increase due to the unfavorable market situation. According to the company, “unfavorable and turbulent developments in the wholesale markets” are unparalleled in recent years, and the price of natural gas has multiplied in the last year. Despite the continuous rise in natural gas prices throughout the year, Pražská plynárenská had previously tried not to pass on the consequences of this situation to its customers. “However, this is unsustainable in the current situation in the long run,” said the company spokesman Miroslav Vránek. The price increase will not affect clients with fixed prices, but it must be considered by households and small customers, who now use the basic Standard price list. Pražská plynárenská has long been one of the largest domestic energy suppliers. It supplies gas and electricity to about 425,000 consumption points. The sole shareholder of the company is Pražská plynárenská Holding, controlled by the capital city of Prague.
