Karlovy Vary Film Festival: Director Jan Sikl builds his film out of long-lost footage of the occupation, and screened it on the 53rd anniversary of that event. It’s hard to imagine a more well-timed and well-placed documentary than Jan Siki’s “Reconstruction of Occupation,” which debuted on Saturday, Aug. 21 at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic. The film had its world premiere 53 years to the day that Soviet tanks and military vehicles rolled into what was then Czechoslovakia, and it screened in a theater, the Kino Čas, that sits on streets that saw those military vehicles in August 1968. Much of the footage stems from a time when the new wave of Czech films was flowering, with landmarks like Jiri Menzel’s Oscar-winning “Closely Watched Trains,” Milos Forman’s “The Fireman’s Ball” and Jan Nemec’s “A Report on the Party and the Guests.” And it came at the end of the Prague Spring, the eight-month period that began when Alexander Dubček became head of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and instituted liberal reforms and increased freedom of the press and freedom of speech. The tender for a new bloc at CEZ’s Dukovany nuclear power plant could be launched by the end of this year, Industry Minister Karel Havlicek said on Sunday. State-controlled CEZ should be able to launch the tender – the Czech Republic’s largest single investment estimated to be worth at least 6 billion euros – once bidders have responded to a security questionnaire. “In my view, it is a matter of maximum one month from the moment the security questionnaires arrive,” Havlicek said in a Czech Television talkshow. Bidders are supposed to submit their responses to the questionnaire, prepared by the interior and industry ministries, by the end of November. “I can imagine (the tender being launched in December), maybe already in November, if the responses come sooner, because all signalled they have no problem with the questionnaire,” he said. Westinghouse of the United States, France’s EDF and South Korea’s KHNP are seen as potential bidders to expand the nuclear plant after companies from China and Russia were excluded. Czech authorities excluded China from the tender in January and dropped Russia in April amid a security row with Moscow over a deadly blast at an arms depot.

In the three weeks of its operation, almost five hundred people have used the services of the mobile vaccination center. The bus has been vaccinating people in many different places in the metropolis without the need for prior reservations. The bus will have several more stops throughout Prague this month. The individual stations of the vaccination bus are located in popular places or cultural events spots around the city. On August 27, the Vaccination Bus will stop at the parking garage in front of the Černý Most Center and at the Rašín embankment for the Auta na náplavce event (August 28 and 29). There is unanimous agreement among Czech politicians, including President Miloš Zeman, that there is no way that the Czech Republic would recognize the Taliban government. Around the world, governments are mostly waiting for how the future government deals with fundamental human rights, especially concerning women and girls. “There is no way we would consider that,” said Jiří Ovčáček, the spokesperson of President Miloš Zeman, when asked whether Czechia should recognize the new Afghan government created by the Taliban. The Wroclaw bishops and archbishops gradually created a monumental Baroque chateau from the medieval castle and used it as a summer residence. In honour of their patron, John the Baptist, they renamed it Jánský Vrch. The chateau on the rocky hill above the town close to the border with Poland was the center of erudition and culture in the most northern tip of Silesia for many years. It stands out for unusual technological peculiarities: a water main was already here at the turn of the 18th and the 19th centuries and in 1906–1932 gas chandeliers and lamps were used in the interiors and in the main courtyard. Of particular interest in the chateau is the interior décor with magnificent furnishings as well as an art collection covering the Renaissance up to Biedermeier. The unique exhibition of pipes and smoking utensils presents not only European but also American, African and Oriental examples. This is the largest exhibition of its kind in the Czech Republic and consists of approximately 1200 items from the 18th to the 20th century. Prague has many iconic sights that become great souvenirs for the city’s visitors. Recently, new items designed and made by local artists were added as official city merchandise- crystal glasses, comics, jewelry made of rose glass, and so on. The low-cost airline Ryanair will not accept tickets and boarding passes that have been sold through the Czech aggregator Kiwi.com.
