The Prague 8 municipal department is marking Roma Holocaust Memorial Day by flying the Romani flag to remember the tragic night of 2 August 1944. Some 21,000 Roma and Sinti people were murdered by the Germans in the so-called ‘Gypsy family camp’ (Zigeunerlager) at Auschwitz-Birkenau during World War II. On the night of August 2, 1944, the Germans killed 2,897 Sinti and Roma in the gas chambers. “On 2 August 1944, the final two transports of Romani people left Auschwitz-Birkenau. More than 900 men were sent to Buchenwald and 490 women to the concentration camp of Ravensbrück. Children, the elderly, and invalids, were murdered in the gas chambers. According to the Czech police, the number of illegal foreigners living in the Czech Republic increased in the first six months of 2021. One of the main reasons for the increase was that the borders with Germany and Austria were not completely closed this year. Ukrainians represented the largest group of illegal foreigners discovered by Czech police in the first half of this year, followed by migrants from Moldova, Afghanistan, Vietnam, and Georgia. According to the foreign police director, Milan Majer, the increase in the number of foreigners illegally staying in the Czech Republic, resulted from violations of the Health Ministry’s regulations imposed to halt the further spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. In June, Fashion Arena Prague Outlet, known as the most visited outlet centre in the Czech Republic, installed three beehives in their outdoor premises. It is one of the series of environmental projects through which the centre promotes biodiversity in its surroundings and it thus encourages its customers to behave more environmentally friendly. The initial intention of all projects leading to the sustainable operation of the centre was to make maximum use of the characteristic feature of the building. That is a circular architectural solution, in the centre of which is located a roofless parking lot. The floor plan allows the centre to be planted with hundreds of different types of plants and trees. The management therefore aimed to build a “self-sufficient ecosystem” in which it would try to utilise the centre’s entire natural potential. Some Prague city districts have received an offer from RailReklam to operate new public transport shelters instead of those owned by JCDecaux. At the end of June, JCDecaux terminated the contract with the municipality for the operation of shelters and its billboards on public transport stops. An area of the Jizera Mountains in North Bohemia known as Jizerskohorské bučiny (Jizera Mts Beechwod) has been placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is the first domestic nature site on this list. A few days ago, three Czech spa towns were also included on the list. The protected national park covers an area of approximately 27 square kilometers on the northern slope of the Jizera Mountains from Oldřichov v Hájích to Lázně Libverda. The area is remarkable for mixed and beech forests on steep slopes with unique geomorphology. The Jizera Mountains “competed” for the place on the list with forests in other countries. Compared to other areas, however, the Jizera Mountains forests are a rarity because, historically, the territory has not been interrupted by human activity as much as other forests. The Czech government on Friday approved a program of help for Afghans who worked with Czech troops during their deployment in NATO missions. Defense Minister Lubomir Metnar said the help meant for Afghan interpreters and their families includes their relocation, an offer of asylum and financial aid. Metnar said the goal of the program is to ensure safe and decent live conditions for them after NATO troops pull out of Afghanistan. The government´s move came days after the Czech veterans, current service members, human rights organizations and others urged the government to help resettle the Afghans because of the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan. NATO troops are ending a deployment launched against al-Qaida and Taliban forces in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks. President Milos Zeman asked the government on Thursday to approve the program without any delay because of fears that Afghans who worked with the Czech military could be killed by the Taliban.
