In the ranking of world financial centers, Prague placed behind Warsaw and Bratislava, as it fell ten ranks to 76th place. New York, London, and Shanghai remain in the lead, according to a study published by the Global Financial Centers Index (GFCI) based on research from the China Development Institute (CDI) in collaboration with the London-based consulting company Z / Yen Partners. CDI and Z / Yen Partners surveyed 126 financial centers and eventually ranked 114 in the 29th edition of the index. The placement is determined by 143 criteria provided by third parties, including the World Bank, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the United Nations. Of the Central European capitals, Warsaw did the best this year thanks to its 61st-place ranking, but it also lost four places compared to the last edition. Bratislava came in 66th place but advanced 21 places higher than last year. Budapest was the worst in 85th place, although it also jumped 16 places ahead. The Czech Supreme Audit Office published a report on Monday saying the Czech health ministry had made numerous mistakes while tackling the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the report, the ministry had greatly underestimated the preparation needed, including not updating their so-called pandemic law since 2011 or any emergency medical stockpiles between 2011 and 2019. Moreover, the purchase of protective equipment and medical supplies in the spring of last year was lacklustre and lead to significant differences in quality and price, with only 29% of purchased products reaching the necessary quality standards. The Supreme Audit Office also pointed out that the health and interior ministries did not cooperate at the start of the pandemic, which led to delays in the distribution of protective equipment around the country. The interior ministry has already blamed the health ministry several times for failing to secure protective equipment. Still, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš continues to deny any wrongdoing, saying that the whole world had been unprepared for the pandemic. Czech Airlines (ČSA) is planning to resume flights to another five European destinations in the coming weeks. As of April 2, ČSA is planning to resume flights to Odesa, Ukraine (twice a week), as of April 16 to Amsterdam (nearly daily), as of May 1 to Copenhagen (nearly daily) and Keflavik (four times a week), and as of June 12 to Malta (once a week). Currently, ČSA operates regular flights to Paris (daily), Stockholm (3 times a week), Kyiv (daily), and Moscow (three times a week). The number of flights to these destinations is also to increase in spring. With respect to the rather unfavorable epidemiological situation across Europe and the existing restrictions, Czech Airlines is extending the free rebooking option until 30 June 2021. Health professionals are reassessing the current quarantine guidelines regarding the novel Coronavirus mutations that have made their way to the Czech Republic. The nation’s Chief Hygienist Jarmila Rážová went on Czech Television to explain that people who came into contact with someone infected with one of the Covid mutations and wore only cloth masks should quarantine while those wearing respirators may not be required to quarantine again even if they were closer than two meters away. The so-called Kent-variant, a highly infectious strain first discovered in the UK, has been confirmed to reach the Czech Republic and is believed to be 30 to 70 percent more contagious. Over one million people in the Czech Republic have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, and 371,235 people have received both necessary doses, data from the Health Ministry show. Since late December, when vaccinations started, a total of almost 1.38 million doses were applied by Monday evening, with the number of those who have received at least one dose reaching 1,007,422. The Czech Republic is in the tenth position in the European Union in terms of its Covid-19 vaccination rate, with 9.4 percent of its population having received at least one dose of the vaccine, compared with Malta and Hungary, which lead the EU with 22.5 and 16.4 percent, respectively. Prague city hall has rented a luxury hotel where homeless people who contract COVID-19 can convalesce and those who come into contact with someone with the disease can isolate. The city’s Centre of Social Services (CSSP) deputy director Ludmila Tomešová said those housed in the hotel were offered three meals a day, full medical attention and television and other amenities while they recovered. “So the hotel … has guests, even if they are not standard commercial ones, and it is full all the time,” she told Reuters at a four-star Prague hotel in the city centre that has housed about 250 people since November.
