The CoroVent pulmonary ventilator, which has been developed by a team of experts headed by Prof. Karel Roubík, from the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague, has received certification from the FDA (the United States Food and Drug Administration). The United States government agency FDA has confirmed that the CoroVent pulmonary ventilator has met all the criteria for safety and for its declared purpose. It has therefore been approved for emergency use in healthcare facilities for treating patients with Covid-19 under conditions set out in the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). With this certification, CoroVent can be supplied anywhere in the world where the certification is recognized, i.e. outside the borders of the European Union. “Right from the beginning of the design of the CoroVent ventilator, we of course took into account the need to get this certification. The Czech Republic and Tunisia have been added to Malta’s amber travel restriction list. From Friday 28 August at midnight, every person arriving in Malta needs to produce a negative COVID-19 swab test 72 hours before arriving in Malta or else be subject to random testing upon arrival. Passengers who fail to present the certificate will be made to take a swab test at the Malta airport and could be asked to remain in quarantine. The Czech Republic and Tunisia join Bulgaria, Romania, and parts of Spain who are also on the amber list. 38 new cases of COVID-19 have been registered overnight in Malta, according to the latest figures released by the Health Ministry. Since the start of the pandemic in March, 1,029 people have recovered from the virus and ten patients have died. The Czech government has extended its job support program for coronavirus-hit companies until the end of October, Labour Minister Jana Malacova said on Monday. The job furloughing scheme, together with direct compensation payments to the self-employed, represent the two biggest chunks of the government’s effort to help the economy hit by the global pandemic. “(The government’s scheme) Antivirus (was) approved until the end of October,” Malacova said on her Twitter account. In the two main legs of the Antivirus program, the Labour Ministry has paid out 17.3 billion crowns as of Aug. 24, data on the ministry’s website showed. “There are still companies that need help. But nothing lasts forever and we are mainly fine-tuning a permanent kurzarbeit to help in a crisis whenever needed. Like there is in Germany,” Malacova said. Under the Czechs’ kurzarbeit scheme, companies get compensated for part of their workers’ salaries, enabling them to reduce the workload in order to save funds during the crisis. Baltic Chain Story Three Baltic countries – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – demonstrated their solidarity in their quest for independence by forming a human chain on August 23, 1989. Approximately 2 million people joined their hands that day. The extraordinary event drew global attention and finally led to the Baltic States regaining their independence. Few things can spoil the urban landscape like an improperly placed advertisements. This is especially valid for a historical city like Prague, whose beauty has few rivals in Europe. Prague has long been fighting against the visual smog, coming from many of the central commercial establishments. Luckily, this situation may soon become a thing of the past, as the local authorities are making coordinated steps towards eliminating visual clutter. Their latest initiative is the termination of 38 contracts with various companies for the placement of advertising banners. Based on today’s decision, dozens of advertising spaces should disappear from various parts of Prague. According to the approved document, the current tenants have a notice period of three months. As the authorities explain, advertising legislation is currently very fragmented, and it is, therefore, difficult to determine with which regulations commercial establishments need to comply. This allows for many ads to be placed without proper permission and often end up in violation of regulations. The Liechtenstein authorities sent a complaint to the ECHR demanding the return of the land confiscated by the Czech Republic at the end of World War II, RG reported referring to the Financial Times. There are disagreements between the two countries over the confiscation of the property of the Liechtenstein family, primarily in Moravia. Based on the Benes decrees, the princes of Liechtenstein were declared collaborators of the Nazi regime. According to Liechtenstein Foreign Minister Katrin Eggenberger, the illegal application of Czechoslovak decrees and the consequences remain an unresolved issue. For his part, Deputy FM of the Czech Republic Martin Smolek noted that the case should not be sent to the ECHR, since the court does not consider issues that arose before the adoption of the European Convention on Human Rights. Liechtenstein disputes the sovereignty of the Czech Republic over a territory of over two thousand square km, which is over ten times the current territory of the principality. A number of protective measures have been in place at Václav Havel Airport Prague set up to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 disease and protect the health and safety of passengers. These include, for example, the obligation to wear a face mask or in other way cover one’s airways while inside the airport premises. Now, passengers can buy face masks and other gear preventing the spreading of infection from the vending machines installed directly at Václav Havel Airport Prague. Alongside disposable airway covers, i.e. face masks, the installed vending machines offer respirators, protective shields, disinfectants, and other hygienic aids, either in individual pieces or in sets. Vending machines are located in both terminals in both the public and restricted areas of the airport. The vending machine offer includes either one piece of KN95 respirator for a price from CZK 89, disinfectant gels for a price from CZK 99, a package of five or more Czech-made face masks starting at CZK 125 or travel packages that contain, for example, a shield, a gel and face masks or a face mask set and gloves.
